Staff is amazing, very professional and most importantly caring. Small intimate setting with individualized treatment plans, excellent curriculum and outstanding location. The only weakness would be the speed of the internet other than that everything is exceptional. This is from an email I sent to Peak Wellness about my terrible experiences with them: I am going to begin with the last conversation I had with a staff member of Peak. I had called on 10.16.20 to inquire about receiving a refund for a counseling session that I never had, from 10.9.20 (more on the details of why are below). The front desk sent me to a voicemail and a few hours later I received a call back from a woman in accounting, whose name I cannot recall. She asked me what charge I was requesting to be refunded as she didn’t see anything on my account. After a discussion of the specific dates and a recounting of how I had called to prepay for the session in question, she said I had two charges, one was for the first counseling session and the other was for the intake. I was surprised about the intake charge and when I told her that no one told me there was a charge for the intake, the woman in accounting literally laughed and said something to the effect of “no, we charge for all of our appointments”. She was incredibly rude about it, and I’m going to interject here to brings up another big issue: I was never even told how to pay for a session. Not in the intake, not in the financials appointment, and not in my first session. I actually had to ask a friend who goes to therapy at Peak Wellness, who told me I had to call and ask to pay. I’m already on the sliding scale payment system because I am obviously low income, of which I had to provide proof, and to have that woman in accounting basically call me a liar and say there is no money to be refunded is a big deal. Not to mention I had, I thought, prepaid for a session - which is not something I’d expect of someone who is lying. I would have been fine with paying for the intake had it been mentioned by anyone, at all. It was not. I didn’t even know what a session would cost until after that intake appointment, when I had the phone call about financials. What if I had decided to not move forward with therapy after that intake, would there just be some random amount billed to me? Perhaps there is a method behind the way it’s being done, but I cannot see one. I’d have appreciated someone being upfront, but instead I’m left feeling like I was scammed, and by a mental health center of all places. To say it’s upsetting is putting it mildly. I had a situation with my therapist on 9/25/20 where my therapist never confirmed how we’d have our second appointment; our first had been over zoom so that’s what I assumed but never received a meeting invitation via email. She called me on a blocked number 5 minutes past our scheduled session, leaving a voicemail that said if I didn’t get ahold of her within 10 minutes, by 4:15, she’d have to reschedule. I was upset because of the anxiety produced by the entire event and the fact that my session at this point wouldn’t even be an hour - a session I was under the assumption I had prepaid for. A large part of why this situation was so upsetting is that at the end of my first session with my therapist, she said she would have someone call me to schedule another appointment for the very next week, as she wanted us to have two appointments within two weeks. I waited all week and no one called. I would venture to guess you understand why this is difficult as a person who is seeking therapy. The next week I called to reschedule and was told my therapist only had 30 minute appointments for the next 2 weeks. The person at the front desk also said “oh, that’s weird, it says here that your therapist and you don’t speak the same language”. As a person living with fairly intense anxiety, that was very triggering and it’s hard not to read in to that. At any rate, that seems like an inappropriate thing to tell a client who quite clearly speaks English as a first language, just as the therapist does. Despite how uncomfortable that conversation made me, I did initially take one of those 30 minute appointments because I felt I needed someone to talk with as soon as possible. However, a few days later I decided to cancel and to switch therapists, as I needed more support than that, and the comment about not speaking the same language was still weighing on me. The receptionist said she didn’t know who to ask about switching therapists, and when I said the 30 minute thing wasn’t the only issue she cut me off and replied “yeah we’ve all got issues”. Then she said that someone would call me back, “hopefully”. That’s literally what she said - “hopefully”. Between that first session and the second that never came to fruition, I had called to pay my bill and was told it would be $36. I asked if I could prepay the following days’ appointment too, which I did. Whomever it was I spoke with never mentioned the intake charge. I came to Peak for help because I recognize my mental health is declining, but truly it’s made things worse. It’s honestly frightening, if my mental health was even worse, dealing with the staff at Peak would have had me in a really bad place, and it did indeed hurt me. I’m just lucky to have folks in my life who care. No one at Peak Wellness, other than the woman I had the intake with, who by the way also did not mention a charge, was professional or even compassionate. As of writing this it has been 4 business days since I asked to switch therapists and no one has called me back. The only call I’ve received was from the woman in accounting, actually. And that conversation was demeaning. I’ll end this very long message by saying I don’t want to be assigned another counselor with Peak and I have begun the search for another clinic and therapist.
