As a parent going through a very tough, vulnerable time with our teenager, I want to thank this school for helping us get back on track. Students who have supportive families will do the best, regardless of the program. In order for your student to succeed, you have to commit to weekly telephonic-skype type appointments, monthly on-site visits with family therapy each time, appointments with your own therapist in your own home state, and a willingness to commit to the discharge plan. This, for us, consists of a partial hospitalization program from 8-4 each day for 2 and 1/2 weeks with family therapy both at this program, as well as with a private family counselor. Add in psychiatry appointments, administration twice daily of a rather exotic psych med regimen, which will gradually be tapered down to something simpler. At the end of the 2 and 1/2 weeks, we begin another program where he attends from 4-7 pm (mind you, rush hour traffic 45 minutes from here ) three times per week. This takes some real juggling, especially if the parents have other children, like we do (two under 13), careers, or just want to have dinner more than twice per week. In other words, parents, you have to be on your toes. You also are going to have to hold your child very close, monitoring all social events, and keeping in mind that your child has special needs (for real!), so upping your game to match. If parents learn as much as the kids, I say this program will be a success. The counselors are good at what they do. No program is perfect. But results are primarily the responsibility of the family and student. If the family keeps doing the same thing and expects different results, they will fail. It took us two tries. The first time he came home from PCS after five months, we were not on the same page and ill prepared to follow the discharge plan. Our son was back in PCS in six weeks after nosediving right back into his old life of running and using. After four more months, his dad and I finally got on the same page and committed to the aftercare plan and to doing things differently in general. Our son also took things more seriously, perhaps following our lead? I have my son back, he looks great, he is himself despite the medications making him a little tired. As I said, we will likely carefully wean down to a good medication routine that is less complicated soon, with the assistance of a psychiatrist. Being a teenager is tough, but so is being a parent. Let these people help you, and they will. Open your heart. Don't give up. Thank you for helping us parent when we were struggling. Thank you, Provo Canyon School, for keeping our son safe and progressing academically and emotionally despite being in a very bad state of mind that could have led to really scary, life-altering choices, for accepting our flaws as individuals and as a family, and for helping us get back together as a family. We did the work on our end, you met us more than halfway. Now the real journey begins.

I was admitted to PCS with the promise of skiing and horseback riding when not in class. What a lie! I entered in 1994. What a shock and damaging to me. I was so stressed here that I lost 30 pounds in 3-months. The nurses ignored my requests for evaluation. I stopped menstruating because of the stress. You can gas light us or take us seriously. I'm an adult with a successful life, no thanks to PCS. It was a militant atmosphere, focused on punishment. The schedule was absurd. We'd shower then do a hard workout before bed time. Then the "counselors" would play the radio and munch on junk food while we teens were supposed to sleep. I had many of my belongings confiscated from me and placed in storage. Much was stolen and never returned with outtake. This included jewelry. Your staff are thieves. Let me complain about the work conditions. I was promised minimum wage to clean the school after hours. I was 15 and cleaning bathrooms at 8 PM. This is illegal. Then when my mom discharged me early they refused to pay me the hours I worked. Shameful! PCS is excellent at gas lighting. They say we are crazy and are manipulative. What a disgrace.

Hey Mathew, I know what you mean about no checkups to see if the program was effective. This is what separates these behavioral modification facilities from real doctors. They don't check up on people because either a) they don't care, or (b) they already know these programs are ineffective, so why confirm this by checking up on people. I kept in touch with several people. One of them John Hurst, died of a heroin overdose (he got hooked in prison). I was back in drug rehab within a year of leaving PCS. Another person I kept in touch with was smoking crack until he got his life together.

I went to a hell hole called cascade. I met quite a few students who had been inmates here. They all said it was far worse - stuff that's not legal like making kids work 12 hours chopping wood in the snow - worse than cascade. I cannot imagine as cascade was closed due to many many lawsuits and death of a few students. I myself (1992) had hepatitis from contaminated food I was served almost died. They refused to take me the hospital and my liver is not the same. Honestly, just love your kids bc sending them to receive abuse - sexual, physical and psychological will only screw them up more.

I was a student and resident almost 10 years ago, but the time spent at this facility was incredibly traumatic and emotionally stunting. I was here under 18 months and had an incredibly hard time assimilating back into high school, family life and society in general after being here. I felt guilty getting a glass of water out of my own kitchen upon completing the program, to give you an idea of what an impact they made on me and what a sense of shame and fear was instilled. Imagine throwing your your child into a juvenile hall rather than what the website sells you, which is a state of the art treatment facility staffed by the best therapists money can buy. This is a disciplinary facility, the likes of which are illegal in my home state. I was not allowed outside to breathe fresh air or see the sun the first several months for being deemed manipulative and a "flight risk" after I was denied phone calls with my family because I would cry about wanting to go home and explain to my family why I didn't belong there and that I felt in over my head with the other older residents with more severe issues. If I mentioned not liking the facility and wanting to go home during my supervised phone calls I was deemed manipulative, the calls were immediately ended and further supervised phone calls were taken away as punishment. This upset my Grandfather to no end, but other members of my family believed this was part of a treatment plan. I attempted several times to be treated elsewhere and the staff made every effort to keep me from contacting my family including screening my incoming and outgoing mail like a prisoner. The units were staffed by locals who were no older than 25 at most, devout Mormons with little to no training in social or behavioral sciences, many of who were students at the local university, newly engaged and becoming young parents and constantly being replaced. This is absolutely "just a job" to them, and the vindictive punishments I saw them dole out to other residents with more severe issues than I was facing, was truly upsetting, even more so in retrospect as an adult woman. I will never forget watching a huge Samoan man body slam this tiny Alaskan native girl K* when she was clearly having an emotional break down and needed to be tended to by a therapist but was instead met by him and a team of nurses who gave her an involuntary sedative they call "booty juice". She was then sent to a floor called investment which was essentially solitary confinement and returned months later heavily medicated and completely broken. I was fairly sheltered and these daily occurrences of watching people's spirits being broken with barely any access to their assigned therapists were too much. I learned fairly quickly fly under the radar and attend the LDS services they offered because they fed us and the staff would treat us favorably if we attended the church services. I was placed here after losing my mother and abusing marijuana as a young teen. I was certainly troubled but I clearly did not belong. I was in the company of and roommates with girls who were 3-4 years older than me, and had issues ranging from being victims of sex trafficking, sexual abuse and childhood prostitution, severe drug use, cutting, suicidal ideations, autism, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, extreme anger problems, you name it, the works. Many of them had no interest in getting better and exposed me to things I should have and would have never been exposed to had it not been for the failings of this facility. I, like most if not all of the residents was placed on birth control despite being a 13 year old virgin and this had never sat right with me as an adult. Please do your research before you send your child here, no matter how much money their school district or insurance is offering to cover. The cost does not correlate with the quality of care. This is like a jail, with the rampant atheletes foot, theft and fighting you see on tv. And from an administrative standpoint care packages sent from my family were often mishandled, money and jewelry "lost" instead of sent back and once my Christmas gifts were distributed to other people, engraved with their patient numbers and had to be collected and re-engraved. Of course they were not even able to get half the stuff back, and all the items were aesthetically ruined with all the scratched out engraving and it was then and only then my family realized how mismanaged the actual living units were. I understand it's been a while since my time at pcs, but consider getting your child additional outpatient services at home rather than throwing them into this large mismanaged facility run by unqualified people almost their same age, with much more limited access to therapists than they originally tell you.

Worst place! They said I was a drug addict when I wasn't. I have autism. I have never seen more bloody rights in my life than when I was here! I wasn't allowed to call my family and if I was it was only a hi and bye in front of my therapist. I had fallen out of a top bunk in my sleep and needed stitches and I was unconscious and they wouldn't take me to a hospital like I needed because I was a "flight risk" after I knocked out... I have left a blood stain from that incident too! The staff would literally pin you down if you went to the bathroom without asking. It you stepped out of the line, you're thrown (literally) solitary confinement room for "not listening" even if you had to itch your nose. Worst place ever! No sunlight, never saw the outdoors the whole 1 year and a half I was there. 2008(9?)-2010. I had my 16th birthday in there and I had a cake but I had to eat it with one person and I wasn't allowed to share with anyone else no birthday song or anything. I was even forced to eat it because they made the cooks make it. I can go on with worse more traumatizing things I've seen and gone through but I won't because I'm better now after the place I went to after there... This place has damaged me and the place after fixed all their mistakes. I can say that my school credits were lost when I was there and I jave no record of attending classes so I was basically a drop out when I was there due to the "loss of class and school reports"! I then eventually dropped out of school due to the loss of motivation of making up the credits they lost which hit me after I left. For your child's safety and future do NOT choose Provo canyon school ever!

Disgusting place. I was forcefully sent here by my parents who are no longer really in the picture nor have control over me. I was a total whore here and slept around and did whatever I pleased as the perverted staff liked me. I saw so much you cannot even imagine. Abuse after abuse. The stabilization/investment unit being the worst of the worst. Absolute in humane acts. Do not recommend sending your son here. Although I had my fair amount of fun, (sex on the daily with the boys there as they were cute, staying up, rebellion, doing whatever I pleased), most will not have this. I was one of the very few lucky ones. I had it very easy. The amount of abuse here is absolutely terrible.

I'll keep this short. I was held prisoner here from 97-99. I am now a somewhat high functioning, married, mother of one daughter AND continue to struggle with chronic PTSD symptoms in direct relation to abuse incurred in this facility. I have a pretty amazing life and husband, to say I am blessed is an understatement. But this is all in spite of Provo Canyon School. My mother is not a part of my life, and that IS MOSTLY BECAUSE OF PROVO CANYON SCHOOL. Yes, you read that right. Despite the many years of post PCS therapy I have received, I am still unable to forgive her for abandoning me in THIS facility and do not trust her to be in my daughters life as a result.

Everything parents are shown about this facility is a facade. The photos on their website are an absolute joke. Through careful and systematic repression of speech of the children there, Provo Canyon School sells parents on a magic fix with swimming, activities, and family values, when in reality its success rates are dismal and they are hurting more children than they help. I can only speak on the female campus, as that is where I was, but it's one large building which reeks the way buildings do when windows are never opened. The pool and pretty pictures are from the male campus. You are dehumanized and your true struggles and needs ignored in favor of fitting you into an equation of typical mental illness, addiction, or adolescent behavior. Children are medicated and threatened into obedience through military structure. My head was shaved, I was kept in isolation (a little bare cement room), tied down, and shot up against my will (and without the consent or knowledge of my parents) with Haldol on a near daily basis for several weeks. My communication with my parents was restricted. You are not allowed to speak about abuse to your parents, or your own "therapist" will discredit you, claim you are manipulating, and you will be punished while they take time to convince your family that you're just crazy; nothing bad is happening to you. At one point I did not go outside for over a month, and I was restricted from speaking to any of my peers. This makes children better? I don't think so. I was demeaned by staff, repeatedly harassed by a male staff member, and I watched many other girls suffer through emotional and physical abuse and neglect. One girls lung collapsed from illness which went long ignored by nurses and staff.

I went to school here for 11months in 1990. It was horrific. I was sabotaged at any form of success in moving up the levels. I was always standing Investment Points off. Standing frozen for 12 hours a day. I was forced to work and had to earn back the right for education. I was tied down kept in solitary threatened with them petitioning my stay through the age of 21. While there I fell ill and the staff ignored my concerns. One evening during school cleaning duty I found an unlocked office door with a phone. In 20 seconds I reached my mother and pleaded with her to help me. A week later she flew me home to Seattle where I was diagnosed with Hashimotos Thyroiditis. I was unrecognizable to my family and my spirit was broken. I was 16 years old then. I ran away so not to ever go back. I never lived with my mother again. PCS is a torture and abuse prison. If you send your children here you should have your parental rights permanently revoked.

My name is Randall. Iam a graduate of Provo Canyon School of about 15 years. I spent 18 long months at Provo Canyon School and it was THE best thing that could have ever happened to me. From the age of 13 I ran away from home, was arrested several times and did things I hate to even think about. Deep down I just needed help. Provo Canyon School changed my life.Provo Canyon School Saved my life and Provo Canyon School saved my family. Simply put, regardless of what mental or physical struggles i was facing while at PCS I was expected to meet the schools high expectations. Hard day at school, so what. There are rules to follow as an individual and as a team/room/unit. Homesick, yep that sucked and on top of it I still had to be obedient individually and as a team. If your kid decides to make life choices like run away from home, do drugs, and break the law. Then your child is capable of graduating from Provo Canyon School like I did. In fact, when they are crying and complaining on phone calls that," hey this place sucks, they arent treating me well." Yada yada yada, then its time for you parents to pull up your big boy pants and say, "well son I wish you wouldnt have made the very choices you did to make it into Provo Canyon School. I hope you obey the rules and learn to be a team player fast so you can graduate and come home to us. Talk to you next week kiddo. Love ya! "

I went to this school boys side in 2000 - 2002. I would of agreed with all the bad reports then. But before I went when I was 16. I was locked up most of my life from 12 to 16. I didn't care. Hell I left juvenile hall in shackles to go there. Imagine first time flying and then add shackles. The school maybe all about money but the staff. The ones that care. Take u under there wing. I was molded by the best men and women. I'm now the man and father I am today because of them. They saved my life. Out of the friends and kids I knew before going 33 friends died of over doses. To hard drugs like haroen, ghb, meth. If I didn't go I would of been with them or locked up. They saved me after getting out. I stayed out of trouble. I knew respect for my self and others. I knew how to say no and see what and who was worth being in my life. So say what you want but I thank u PCS and all the staff that worked there right down to the cooks, Landry lady and the barber. Also thank you to the staff that's there now. I'd send my kids there if God forbid they go down my path. Ur sending ur kids here to change because u can't control them. If you want to baby them send them to the ymca. U want them to be better send them here.

There is an easy way to tell that Provo Canyon School does not Care about your child. They have no after program check ups, they do nothing to see if their work on your child is a success. I'm 40 years old, and the scars from this place when I was 15 to 16 will always be there. You have kids of rich parents with no time, with kids with a court order for violence, with kids who have deep mental issues, or even mild ones like autism, then you throw them all together without regard, put your knee on their neck. They are probably are no longer a Drug Testing center, (test doses on children) but they were. I have 4 kids of my own, I ended up ok. But that was from work to rid myself of what this place can do to you. If you're wondering what to do with your kids, do something else. This will only damage them, your relationship... permanently. Even if you're at your wits end and think it can't worse, you're very very wrong. Skip this, find another program if you've lost control.

I was at provo canyon school for 3 years. Age 12-15. I had mild behavioral problems and ran away from my abusive home several times. I had never done drugs or even smoked a cigarette. Alot of people point out that pcs saved their life. I can say I was in an unsafe and dangerous environment, however, the trama and pain that I suffered at the hands of staff and therapists there was pretty emotional damaging. I went through 4 therapists in 3 years due to them quiting. I was place on so many anti-psychotics, and daily mild tranquilizers for when I was feeling an emotional outburst or seemed like I was getting worked up. Their process of Controlling you when you didn't do exactly what they said was to radio a dial 9. Where all available staff would full out run to your location and restrain your arms and legs lifting you off of the ground. I was carried belly to the floor down hallways and slammed on a cement floor while Lorna and Leslie processed to press my face into the floor, give me a booty injection of Haldol, and yelling at me to call down. Due to the fact that I was doing cartwheels in the gym when it was time to line up. This was not the first or last time I would be injected with a tranquilizer and made to sit Indian style or sleep in a cement room smaller than a jail cell. The physical abuse and medical neglect was bad, but I believe the mental damage done from the untrained staff was far worse. Being made to sit nose to the wall for hours without being told why you are being isolated will stay with me far longer than the cuts and bruises.

Wow, this place was a living hell. I still have issues from this NIGHTMARE 20 years later! It didn't change anything. I just wanted to try all the stuff I hadn't when I got out of there. I was 10X worse at the things my parents wanted changed and when I finally grew up, I have massive abandonment issues. DO NOT DO THIS TO YOUR CHILD. IT DOESN'T HELP.

I didn't realize what a NIGHTMARE was until I attended this "school". I was lucky enough for my father to come here for a visit and see first hand the sickness that went on behind these walls. I will never forget one second of this sick place. Physical abuse, mental abuse, emotional abuse, and lets not forget drug abuse. Without parental consent children are drugged and thrown into a cell similar to a padded room with out the pads also known as "observations". They will be left there drugged and ignored for 24 hours at a time. I think a woman by the name of Jody may still work there, she is the supreme of them all. The therapists responsible for giving you updates on your child see them once a week, if that. The rest of the time their performance reviews are based on 18 year old power hungry staff members who are there as part of an internship. Please, I beg and ask of you to please consult me or another former student of this place before you think twice about sending your troubled child to a sadistic place like this.

This is probably one of the most abusive institutions in america and should be shut down IMMEDIATELY. I was unlucky enough to be a prisoner (not a resident, mind you... residency implies you have free will on the matter) at PCS, and not just any prisoner--a privately funded one. Thats right, while 90% of the children here are court funded, the other 10% simply have abusive parents who pay a lump of money to lock their children up as an alternative to actually raising them. Court ordered prisoners are there for a select period of time, ordered by the court to remain there and PAID for by the court. They often have felonies or several misdemeanors and are there as an alternative to juvenile hall, although the ones that have experienced both say that they actually PREFER juvenile hall over PCS and some even run away, commit crimes, or assault staff in HOPES that they will be placed in juvenile hall instead. Privately institutionalized prisoners are funded by parents or guardians, sometimes even other sources, and an actual REASON for them to be there can simply be fabricated or exaggerated. Once admitted, the staff will simply pick the brain disorder that fits you best and pump you full of medication that has a reverse effect. I cannot stress enough how fallacious and WRONG their system is.

I attended PCS from September 1990 to January of 1992 and in that time I was SLAMMED to the floor, molested, raped, and had my arm twisted out of the socket. I have heard that not much has changed the staff just got better at covering their butts with paperwork. I would not recommend any parent send their child to a place where 300 lbs football players work for their rent or any place in UT because these places are very well protected by the LDS church.

the "graduates" i know from here all are pregnant or have a kid by 20. others are into drugs and raves. i got lucky because my problems going in were attitude related not drug, truancy, behavior, ect. related. i did get a lot but i lots more than it was worth. parents considering provo canyon school: positive: good balanced meals, consistent daily structure of time and schedule, positive learning tools taught as well as important life lessons. um. vacation from my family? YEAH negative: your child will be around others with severe problems (i myself was assaulted twice. sure, the child was punished but do you really want to put your child at the mercy of someone else's problem they couldn't handle either?), many of the general care staff (non therapists and non doctors) are regular people whit no unique skills to handle the special needs of many individuals, the therapists leave regularly (i had two while i was there but graduated the week my therapist at the time was moving on in work... other girls i know had up to four in less than a year. this is not good for trust building or people with abandonment issues), staff refuses to believe you if you are ill but aren't bleeding or have visible problems (i had a major UTI and couldn't walk. staff told me to stop faking. finally when i wet the bed that night they took me to the nurse where it turns out that i have a serious UTI... )... more and more examples. IT GOT A BIT SCARY SOMETIMES.

parents! DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD HERE!!!!! Staff are ABUSIVE and the food is nothing but sugar and grease. DO NOT listen to anything that those fast talking addmision sleazeballs tell you. I used to be a student there. It was the worst time of my life. I felt like i was in prison, not just because i had very limited communication with my family, but because of the abuse i witnessed EVERYDAY. I myself did not have it as bad because i kept my head down. Their therapy tactics are backward. These people are SNEAKY and they get away with locking girls up and leaving them in a jail cell (i kid you not. they call it "observation") and FORGET that shes in there!!! they should be closed immediatley!!

My son was put here about a year ago and his experience was not good. At first, he complained about the staff that they were mean. His therapist wanted to know what happened so he told the therapist about the staff. That they were taunting students, making them fight each other, threatening them, calling them names, and purposely making students get into trouble so they could discipline them. My son was afraid to tell his therapist because he was told that if you tell you get into more trouble with the staff. After he told his therapist about the abuse, he would say everything was fine, but once he was discharged and at home he said it was a living nightmare. The staff would call him a snitch and purposely get him in trouble. They teased him constantly and got other kids to try to beat him up. I do not think the staff are trained at all and it is a bunch of bullies that help with the students. As a parent hoping for the best, Provo Canyon let my family down. My son is a lot worse off then if he would’ve never gone here. Look around at other places before you decide to get treatment here.

No separation between children with mental health issues and those placed there due to criminal acts lead to rampant bullying, physical and sexual assault. Staff stepping in after the fact is not protecting the child and often times behavior continues or is made worse. No diagnosis or clinical treatment plan provided. No consistent standards for progression through plan. Extremely poor educational standards (went from honor roll, gifted program to special ed due to being so far behind and social anxiety manifested during time at PCS). No attempt to improve family relationships, but an active attempt to diminish them. Told every member of my family that I could not be trusted and was “manipulative” and advised not to read or accept correspondence from me. Therapist openly denigrated me to my family members who were allowed to see me. Excessive force used, including chemical and physical restraints, for non-violent offenses. Isolation used as punishment, not to de-escalate. I spent 9 days in isolation with 2 showers for refusing to admit to something not only did I not do, but that my father also said I did not do during a visit with him. Actively interfered with visitation agreement and parental relationship with non-custodial parent by randomly canceling visits and refusing to allow me to go off-site due to such violations as my socks not folded properly. Refused to honor a court order demanding my immediate release, requiring my father to engage state troopers to retrieve. “Kidnapping” as a means to escort the child to the facility causes severe trauma and this is well documented amongst former residents off this facility and others in the Troubled Teen Industry (TTI). I was placed in PCS 1 week before the signing of divorce papers without the knowledge or consent of my father or the court by a mother who was threatening to kill herself and take me with. My mother engaged in erratic behavior and was known for violent outbursts. I had become afraid to come home and had the situation become known, it would have affected my mother's settlement. She received a lump sum settlement and immediately left the state without providing information about her or my whereabouts - this was clearly child abduction and illegal, yet PCS refused to work with my father or the state and did not modify their program or methods to consider my special needs - which was recovering from trauma relating to my mother's instability and abuse. I spent nearly a year there being further traumatized while the state worked to locate me and revoke my mother’s parental rights.

I went there in 2019 and was sent to stable where i got booty juiced touched and silenced on my birthday. Anytime id tried to tell my parents anything they would send me to stable for a week or two at a time. I got sexually assulted by the students and the staff IT HAS CAUSE DEEP RUTE TRAMUMA FOR the rest of my life.

How this is this awful residential school still open. This is no different from the schools the indigenous people attended. And they have found tens of thousands of dead childrens graves. I will not be silent. I will be loud and this place will be shut down

After reading most of the reviews, Provo canyon School needs to be shut down. The only reason why this messed up school is still operational is because it is protected by the Mormon Church, as it also has a trend of sexual and physical abuses.

CLOSE. THIS. PLACE. DOWN. WHY would any parent send their children here is beyond me. PCS needs to be reviewed by the Health Department and closed. Look at all of these one star reviews and read the complaints. If you still determine this place will help, God help your children.

I was sent to PCS pretty recently. May 2022 was one of the worst months of my life, and the two weeks I was at Provo Canyon School was the worst time of my life. I went there with the expectation that they would actually be willing to help. Little did I know that they would get mad at me for requesting to see my therapist that was assigned to me. Whenever I felt suicidal while I was there (which is why I was admitted in the first place), it was because of PCS itself, yet the staff always said that I needed to spend more time there if I was suicidal. The staff also didn't understand that everyone has struggles and tried to make everyone perfect. Do not send your children there, it is one of the worst places in the United States that you can send your kids to receive help.
