This is one of the worst places you could ever go. I am now 16, the first time I went to Austin Oaks I was 11. I have been here about 4 times due to suicide attempts and self harm, and every single visit has been traumatizing. Some staff are nice and seem to really care about the patients but most were just there for their checks.. The facility did not help at all if anything, it scares patients so much we feel the need to lie about our mental state just to get out of there. Especially if you were forced to come here. I believe that if someone doesn’t want the help, forcing it upon them is only going to make matters worse. Staff had put their hands on me multiple times when I thought they couldn’t do that unless I was causing harm to myself or others, which I never did. They most definitely abuse their powers and so do the doctors. The only good thing about this place is the other patients you meet and the food. I have met friends there that I still talk to to this day! Also, the outpatient program isn’t too bad. The staff there are much better and it’s obviously much more relaxed. Overall, I would not recommend Austin Oaks to ANYBODY.

I’m writing this on a fake account for personal reasons obviously: Whatever you do, do not ever come here and if you have you know why I am saying this. This place is a nightmare, and if you live in Austin we need to stand up as citizens and have this facility shut down permanently. I was forced to go here, and was not told why, or for how long. I waited to be admitted for almost 3 hours in small room (which for someone that has anxiety or claustrophobia it is already a red flag of how much they don’t care) After having to walk around the place myself to find someone and ask them what was going on, I was told “we didn’t say you could get up, go back to the room” like an animal. After being humiliatingly admitted, one of the nurses looked at me and said “hide all of your emotions because if you don’t they will keep you here even longer.” Like my mental health was a joke. I was then put into a cold room onto a rock hard bed and a thin sheet, a lot like prison. After finally falling asleep around 4am, a nurse walks in the room, shines a bright flashlight in my face and says, “get up, you’re getting your blood drawn.” I didn’t get any sleep after then, so I was stressed for a good reason. When the sun came up I was told I needed to have my blood pressure taken, it was high, obviously because I was very stressed and anxious about the situation. The nurse looked at me and said, “if your blood pressure doesn’t go down we’re gonna keep you until it does.” With a cheeky grin. It was then I realized this place was a game, and we were the pieces. The nurses and doctors could treat us as badly as they wanted and say whatever they wanted because “we are the ones that are messed up” so none of what we say holds no water. Hopefully karma catches up to the people who run this facility and they get punished for the terrible things they do to people who need help. I go could go on forever, but sadly this is just google and will not change anything, if you’re reading this and were treated just as poorly, please fight to have this place shut down. It will mean justice for all of us to have a better place so no one has to suffer here any longer.

I was detained against my will for eight days in Jan 2019 because the powers that be thought I was a danger to myself. I rarely saw a doctor even though I was told I would be seen daily. Some staff are compassionate while others clearly could not give a ****. Kathy Stan was a blessing and compassionate social worker and deserves accolades. Her co-worker was not. At one point the co-worker told me not to talk to her because it would \"ruin her day\". Her first name started with an A. Upon discharge I told her since I was brought in by APD I had no means of transportation. She said \"take a bus, my son does it all the time\". Fortunately, an R.N. Irma Lopez intervened and was able to provide a voucher for a taxi. It seems that some staff feel they cannot be held accountable for their words or actions. Be aware that some medical staff are out of network and you will be liable for cost of services until the \"out of network\" deductable is met which in my case is $750. Also, I can\'t believe that you can\'t have dental floss yet you are allowed a plastic fork from the meal tray which is a sharp object.

I was voluntarily admitted to Austin Oaks four days ago. I had never been to a mental health hospital before so it was a bit scary for me. Luckily I was admitted during a time that there were some very sociable patients so it was great that we could act as a support system for each other and watch out for each other. The first day I had crazy anxiety because I felt alone and fearful because I had preconceived notions. As time went on I relaxed and kept active with group therapies and activities which helped me a lot. They also give out journals so I recommend getting one. Nichelle the psychiatrist was great and her nurse practitioner, they really cares about their patients. I do want to do a MASSIVE shout out to Caramelee one of the nurses, she always had a great attitude and helped me do breathing exercises when I had an anxiety attack. I have nothing bad to say about any of the nurses or techs and really appreciate all the work that they are doing. The staff was very professional in general. The criticisms I do have are that the food on the first few days was reallllly bad. I really believe healthy food is a key component in mental health.. They had too much sugary stuff there for snacks. Also if someone gets violent remove them, put them somewhere they can\'t hurt the peaceful population.... I had some girl having psychosis try to come into our room so I shut that door against the rules because I felt unsafe with her around. I feel like it was a good experience for me, and I hope they continue to improve because it seems like the staff really cares and they are doing some really good work. If you go I recommend taking sets of comfortable clothing. Jacket.. lol. Socialize, go to groups, find a buddy or group, report stuff to staff immediately, do not engage with people who are having psychosis or a manic episode, move somewhere else... And remember your goals.

Be very aware of unethical practices. They will lie to you to get what they want no matter what the outcome. Been hearing about a lot of people saying how this place has failed them. Please don’t be afraid to ask for help, just go somewhere else to do so.

I went in during the month of July, 2015. I was admitted and I have to say that this place is a disaster. I didn\'t receive any help in my time there. I do not recommend this place at all. Stay away at all costs. I was involuntarily committed just because I was only thinking about suicide not saying that I was going to do anything about it. That\'s the key word here \"suicide\". As soon as you say that you are committed. I opted to have a mental health officer come by because I believed I was fit to not stay there. He took some notes down as he was talking to me. Then the lady who was interviewing me came in and was saying \"Did he tell you that he slaps himself?\" I didn\'t say that. Then she mentioned that in the past I tried to kill myself which was true but that was years ago. I said that I was fine now I was just trying to get a tour of the facility because I was mentally ill. Officer stated that I lied to him and that I was going in. After that you have no rights what so ever. You are legally bound to this facility. Things just get crazier from here. So you don\'t see a therapist daily there it\'s just this person who comes in at a certain time and asks you a few questions out in the open with other patients around. The food was disgusting. For the amount of money you spend to be there after insurance you\'d think the milk wouldn\'t have an expired date on it. You are only allowed a couple of minutes on the phone. You can only use it once per day if that. You have to take the meds they give you even if it\'s different from what was prescribed to you by your psychiatrist. I felt sick because I was taking meds that I wasn\'t prescribed by my doctor. When I went to the restroom I would see blood in my stool. When I talked to a nurse she didn\'t believe me and refused to help at all. I remember there was this lady that came in to review cases and talk them over with you. When she got to me she told me what was on my case and, here\'s the kicker, what was on there was false information. It said that I lied to the health officer and smacked myself during the interview process. This was not true at all. I was baffled when she said this. I told her that it wasn\'t true and you can tell she was thinking that it wasn\'t her problem. It was just swept under the rug. Thankfully I had an excellent therapist who guided me through my whole stay there. She gave me the information to call up a representative who works with you to get you out of there. She\'s supposed to be there when the head doctor reevaluates. They gave her the wrong time so when it came to look at my case she wasn\'t present. During that interview with the head doctor (an Indian gentlemen) and his staff they were reviewing my case to see if I was to be let go or not. They were going over it and stated that during the mental health officers interview that I slapped myself. I told them that that wasn\'t true. They said that I was going to stay there longer. This was about a week into it. Insurance covers only so much of it. They were keeping me there until the insurance side of things wasn\'t covered any longer. One last thing before I end this review. When you are at this place you are divided up into two groups for some sort of support group. It is mandatory because if you don\'t go it reflects badly on your paperwork. One group went to this really nice lady and the other went to this old guy who used to run the place. I was selected to be in his group. Let me tell you, this guy could care less about the people in that room with him. One day while I was present in his orientation he asked what people did for a living. When it got to me I told him that I was unemployed and still living with my parents. He said, in front of everyone, that I needed to cut the umbilical cord between my parents and I. I have a disability so I cannot work. He embarrassed me infront of everyone there. I will never forget that and I hope you take my advice and heed caution. I learned the hard way that this place is an insurance scam. Heed my warning. Do not go here. Avoid at all costs.

I let her know I saw the bad reviews..she had nothing to defend the company. Zero stars. I was severely traumatized from this hell house. The staff didn\'t understand my condition. I was thrown in the seclusion room one time and I begged for a shot to help me. The doctor thought it was psychosomatic but allowed the shot anyways. I went in 2015 2 times Now it\'s almost 2018 and I\'m still talking to my therapist about how they paralyzed me, how a woman named Anita would yell at me to move when I was paralyzed and she was feeding me with her bare hands. I begged for the shot repeatedly to stop my mania from controlling me and forcing me to hurt myself and others. They wouldn\'t give it until it was too late and I hurt myself or someone else. This is the most traumatic experience I\"ve ever felt. If you have serious problems and want to be further traumatized this is it. This is the place to go. Welcome to Austin Oaks Hospital, where you\'re pain is our thrill.

okes children hospital home.i went through hell as a kid until now i wish i.hadn\'t hit my head in a non padded cell that wasn\'t padded it\'s someone fault leting brain damage happen in place thats spost to be safe. instead 3 employees charge into my cell choose to respond with giving shot of god know what into my behind . i wondering if thay had a file to explain why you needed to BREAK me like a horse. conform?, or be conform? I was 10 yr old.

Literally the worst week of my life, the techs obviously don\'t know how to treat patients with anxiety. I did something wrong on accident, was screamed at, and sent into a panic attack. they\'re also awful to transgender patients, I was sent to the girls room after \"violating a ten foot rule\" between me and another patient. made me feel extremely dysphoric and awful.

met some incredible people here, but was left so much worse after going in. such a stressful unhelpful suffocating environment. the techs were all awesome and most seemed to care a lot. DO NOT admit yourself here if you have an eating disorder, I lost an additional 5 pounds during my stay (the food is horrible). they didn\'t even give me a follow-up psychiatrist, I had to ask for a list when I was discharged!!! which was my main reason for being there, as I hadn\'t had access to one and had been off my meds. unreal.

All the way around not a good place please know as a parent I was told to take my 8 year old son here to get help and to be safe, only to end up with 3 staples in his head. I was given no answers on what happen to my child other then another child did it in the day room. Infront of staff. Yet staff couldnt not tell me what happen, then I was told I could just take my son no doctor discharge papers or safety plan, nothing. Just let him go. I myself know how hard it is to be checked out of these kinds of places and by no means was protocol followed. Please find another place for your child to get the help they need.

Preface: My review is for a family member that was admitted in. Overall: STAY FAR FAR FAR AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. ONLY GO IF IT IS A ABSOLUTE EMERGENCY OR ARE FORCED TO GO HERE. If you can go somewhere else, please do so. I honestly feel this place is more of a money grab and less of a place for help. Key issues that I based my rating on are the billing issues, admissions process, and communications issues. These items are detailed below. --- The Bad: Billing: Prepare to be billed from all directions. I was refused an itemized bill when asked so I could try to work costs down. I was told they do not provide itemized bills because the hospital is \"all inclusive\". However, I\'ve received several other bills from various doctors claiming services and wanting a payment, some of which has even billed me multiple times from different company names. So much for that \"all inclusive\" stay. Their online payment system is a complete joke. There is no way to create a log in account, so you must enter in all your details, your patient details, and credit card information every time you want to make a payment. Admission: During the admissions process I was asked to sign papers and never received a copy of the paper work for my records. I asked for copies multiple times and to talk with someone but they were only concerned with me signing the papers. Later I was finally told that they \"do not provide copies due to legal reasons, but will be provided a summary before I leave\". This was a blatant lie and I waited around for over an hour just to get this special \"code\" I needed to talk / visit my family member. I was given a brochure with the code and visitation schedule hand written in the back of the book. Other than that I was left completely in the dark. I was never told about the process, what to expect, or anything. Their only concern was to get my signature so they could start getting bills in the mail. Which now leads into communications. Communication here is a complete joke. Trying to get any information is like pulling teeth. Release dates come and go. I was told several different dates the person would be released. Each time it was pushed back. Finally I was told they \"must stay in for at least a week and would be released.\" Once a week rolled around I head nothing. Finally on day 10, they were released. I was told that they would not be released until a payment is made. After calling up their accounting department and thorwing a fit, I was told it was just a misunderstanding and they justed wanted to let me know I would need to make a payment as soon as possible to prevent my account from going to collections, which they said \"can happen quickly.\" As for the doctors here, i\'m not sure exactly how this works. It seemed there was a high turn over and judging by the reactions of the receptionist there were new doctors all the time. It almost seemed like there was a very high turn-over rate. While just waiting in the lobby several new doctors had showed up. I never had the oppertunity to speak with any of them so the only opinion I can base it on is the crooked billing practices, which I guess is pretty normal this day in age. I know there is more, and I could probably sit here for quite some time writing about the bad so lets move on to the good stuff.. --- The \"Good\": About a week later we had a family session. This was probably the best part of the whole process because it gave everyone a chance to talk about what was going on and suggestions for handling our situation. I was told the group sessions were helpful for our situation as well. That\'s about it for the \"good\" section, if you want to call it that.

Austin Oaks really helped my son. He was brought in on an emergency detention for a suicide attempt a few weeks ago. He was in Georgetown Behavioral 3 weeks prior for an attempted suicide and it was horrible there, so my review will mention some comparison between the two facilities. My son left Austin Oaks feeling much better. The therapy was great and the staff-parent communication was wonderful. They always called and kept me up to date on what was happening and you could easily reach the staff and your child. They were able to get my son\'s meds straightened out and he was feeling much better before he left. When you go and visit, it\'s a much more welcoming environment than Georgetown Behavioral and they don\'t wand you with a metal detector before you go and visit your child, which I feel is somewhat dehumanizing for a parent. Our family therapy visit actually felt like a conversation and was helpful, unlike Georgetown. The staff were all very personable from the receptionist to the practitioners. The only regret I have is not sending my child here originally for his first hospitalization. I feel if he had been at Austin Oaks originally instead of Georgetown, we wouldn\'t have had to re-admit him so quickly after his initial discharge. My son still has flashbacks to the time he spent at Georgetown (only 5 days) and has some PTSD that we are working through in therapy now. I hope this review helps a parent struggling to find a place for their child. It\'s such a horrible and heart breaking situation, and navigating the whole mental health thing is extremely difficult and exhausting. Best of luck!

I\'m writing this on an alternate account as I don\'t want people to be in my business, but this place saved me and allowed me to mentally heal when I was unable to do so otherwise. At the time I was in a state of major depression and I previously didn\'t have the help I needed, but after a two week stay my health had improved drastically there. I even made a few friends that I\'ve stayed friends with past our discharges. However, I will say that from my experience there in the youth side of the facility that the girls had fights and drama nearly every day. They were frequently hooking up with each other and, the way I see it, further worsening their health considering they were in a mental health facility and clearly not in the right place to be finding the love of their lives. It got to the point that some of the more peaceful females had to be moved to the boys\' side to avoid the stress and drama. If the place is still the way it was back then, about a year ago, I highly recommend NOT to bring female adolescents here. It was ridiculous. Since the boys and girls are mostly separated for hopefully obvious reasons, the boys never experienced the same issues in my stay there. Pretty much all of the staff there were very friendly on the boys\' side and were highly focused on helping the patients learn how to improve themselves and deal with difficult situations in the future. I cannot thank Austin Oaks enough for turning my life around from years of gradually worsening depression to gradually improving health and a nearly fully normal life within the half year following my stay. And by the way, the food was great. yumyum

I called and spoke with three different staff members and got three different stories and none of the admin team ever called us back. This place sucks!

I went to both the outaptient program and inpatient, but when I went to outpatient I met the secret love of my life, Dylan Palmer. He went there because he was suicidal and needed help, and he didn\'t get it. He is now dead due to suicide and Austin Oaks didn\'t help at all.

As of right now I am second guessing about sending him here since I can\'t even get a hold of anyone with Addimissions so he can do their outpatient treatment program. This is my third time calling and about my 10th time beging transferd to Addmissions. If you guys can not even answer the phone for an Addmision appointment than I wouldn\'t trust you guys to take care of my son. As of right now I have been on the phone for 17mins and no help

My son had a week stay at Austin Oaks recently before continuing onto rehab. I was very impressed with the staff here. His therapists were wonderful. I felt that the hospital was very communicative on a daily basis. I would definitely recommend Austin oaks in the future to friends and family. I am surprised by the poor reviews

The staff is quite nice, and they did wonders for a loved one, but the organization itself seems to be corrupt. In my opinion, things are designed to maximize \'bodies in beds\' and profit. Do not forget that this is a business. One example is that they claim to be \'willing\' to release someone within 4 hours, but the visitation is after the doctors leave, which means there is a 24 hour wait guaranteed. One more overnight charge. Corruption, pure and simple, as far as I am concerned.

Off benzos for almost 2 years. This place saved my life . While reading other reviews i kinda agree with both sides positive and negative. Patient/doctor time was rushed and limited. As with any place staff varied in skills to help and willingness to help. 5 stars bc without this place and stay id be not where and whoni am today. If regular meds are already monitored before and and under control this place might be more beneficial to u. Either way choose to be proactive and get better and just gut up and.do it before its too late . i was lost but now better found. 5Stars bc rehab is the answer. This place allows u to have cig breaks every couple hours. Really helped distressing after an intense class or discussion.

From October 1974 until mid March 1978, I was in treatment at what was known simply “The Oaks” and was under the Brown Schools “banner” at that time. I know we are taking many years ago for me, but I am reading some of the negative reviews; most of looks to have been written by kids and or teens. A lot of what they are describing; is very similar to what I experienced there, and from a young bucks stand point I get it, BUT looking at all I went through at The Oaks in hindsight; it was a big time blessing as when I got there, I was in serious need of therapy and corrective action which I got and then some. Part of the treatment plan to getting me and others on track was to not let us talk to family for certain amount of time as it was deemed a big distraction to assessing how to best help me and when I did talk with my parents; it was monitored and notes were taken by staff; again not as a violation of privacy but rather as a way to understand relations of family members and how to coach me and my family to get along and understand each other better. What seems like not caring on part of the staff is actually caring by use of the “humanistic approach” in psychology. It is in simple terms the no nonsense way of approaching psychological issues and counter reaction for every action good or bad in real time. Part of the “secrecy” if one could call it that has to with laws pertaining to doctor patient confidentiality and this is especially true when it comes to psychological treatment; laws are very strict about this in every way. Yes, The Oaks is there to help and provide a much needed service which I am sure they do and do quite well, but the fact of the matter is that The Oaks is a place of business and business are there to make money, so yes it makes sense to do the best they can to keep costs and overhead down so long as the services don’t suffer as a result. I would hardly call that corruption as has been implied in comments of other folks. In closing, A lot of the negative comments look to be from kids, teens or very immature adults and have an axe to grind. Quite possibly a lot of the negative posts are from one person in reality, but not all. Point being don’t trust reviews. Trust your heart. The Oaks was an intricate part of my life and helped me to become the person I am today. ALL GOOD.

this is a bad place i use to go there when i was 14 yours old and now im 44 years old i still have bad dream. i hate the stuff there and what they do to us. dr.mattew was my doctor at time. i feel bad for everybad that go there.

My daughter was admitted to this hospital Because she wanted to get some help it was her request We are not impressed at all with the care she Received I tried to take my daughter out they refused to let her go home I had her full power of attorney Documents in hand at the time Also I wanted to see my daughter to make sure she was OK because she was not OK on the phone they refused to let me see her she was getting steadily worse while she was in their care Then when I picked her up when I finally was able to get her out I was told her purse and her belongings were taken they would look back on the video And let me know what happened to personal belongings when I called back they said she had signed something stating she got all of her belongings which that was very underhanded to have her sign something they knew she did not get The reason I’m her power of attorney is because she’s not capable of signing paperwork so this is all underhanded In my opinion When I asked to make a formal complaint They got me in touch with an advocate She stated to me she had signed that paper there’s nothing she could do so she just lost all of her belongings her purse etc. I also addressed the other problems at hand that she and I had experienced However very uncaring and did not represent my daughter at all I thought that’s what she was for I also asked to speak to someone higher up never got anywhere Then the nerve to bill us a huge bill for even the day that I did not want her in there Because she called me and told me she was getting worse she wanted to come home she had asked to come out they were no help at all in our situation now my daughter doesn’t reach out for help at hospitals anymore because she’s scared they won’t listen to her needs they also took away all of her medication her doctor had Prescribed for her that actually helped her She had just had a major surgery on her nose They would not let her use her nose spray or her medication or let her clean her bandages when I pick her up she could hardly breathe out of her nose I would never refer this Hospital to anyone I’m very disappointed in how they cared for my child and the lack of respect for myself and my child
