Reading the reviews below makes me question many things. First, some of the people sound like they assumed The Ranch was some sort of day spa that is centered on \"finding oneself.\" The Ranch is a rehabilitation facility with a focus on addictions and mental illness, not a wellness retreat. Rehab is designed to be uncomfortable and designed to be hard work. Facing one\'s demons is never pleasant. Yes, it is expensive, but what rehabilitation facility that is not in an urban center, not in a hospital, not limited to just detox and medication-based treatments is not expensive? I did A LOT of research before I chose to go to The Ranch in 2016. For what I needed, The Ranch not only had one of the best programs for my particular issues, but it also had a very low client-to-therapist ratio, it had a pretty astonishing success rate, had a strong alumni presence, and was truly only mid-range when it came to expense. Did I love everything about it? Of course not! Was I satisfied with every treatment option or every therapist/facilitator? No. But, did I have empathetic and well-trained therapists and RAs that specialized in dealing with people just like me? Definitely. Did I get to try different therapies to see what worked for me? Yes. Did I work closely with other women trying to overcome the same issues as me in a warm, safe, home-like environment? YES! YES! All pretense aside, The Ranch probably saved my life. I went back for the alumni weekend a month ago, and most of the people I met there all wish they could go back, even for just a week or two, to be able to get back to working on the most difficult and painful things that keep popping up no matter how mentally healthy or sober someone may be. If you are looking for someplace that fills your days with yoga, a pool, horseback riding, zip lines, 5 star chefs, and pampering, you need to find a resort. If you are looking for rehab that treats the whole person in a holistic manner, with a variety of treatment options, in a rural location away from normal stressors, with a track record of success stories, then I would look at The Ranch. P.S. The photos in the ads can only have actors/models in them because clients are afforded privacy and anonymity in any reputable treatment facility. *NOT AS ADVERTISED!!!!!! Do NOT use their website as a tool. Most of the things they state on their website are no longer available and/or is false. When I called to ask questions Thomas Hooker told me anything he had to in order to convince me this place was going to give me the help I\'ve been searching for. I was very specific with what I needed and I did NOT get even 1 of my needs met. I went in for help to greave my many losses, depression, anxiety, wellness and menopause. After my 4 night stay at The Ranch it was clear to me that they truly were NOT caring for me. From a mental health treatment perspective I am beyond disappointed. The Ranch uses the 12 step program which is for alcoholics and addicts. They give everyone that enters treatment the same 12 step book. The Ranch told me I had to pay $2,311.00 out of pocket and then my insurance would cover the rest 100% so I paid the full amount. I spoke with my insurance today and was told I had already met my deductible ($500.00) before I even admitted myself into The Ranch. Not only did they lie to get my money but they violated numerous Legal Human Rights. They are taking advantage of people when they are at their lowest place mentally, emotionally and/or physically. I am seeking a full refund from The Ranch and will be speaking with a recommended lawyer this week. I am a 41 year old woman that was being told what to do by a 19 year young girl (that was there for self harming and eating disorder) what I\'m to be doing and where I\'m suppose to be at all times. She was put in the position of being the house buddy because she has been there the longest. The Ranch requires the patients to do house chores, cook for the house, make grocery list, do inventory, complete multiple \"phase up\" tasks in order to get any phone privileges. That is NOT what I was paying for, I could have just stayed home to do my house hold chores etc. I spent just under $400.00 on flight tickets just to get to The Ranch. The house they made me stay in had cockroaches, smelled of mold and had obvious water damage. I lived on pretzels and water because the food was sketchy and the kitchen was repulsive. I had to share a bedroom and a bathroom with a complete stranger. One of the other young girls that was living in the same house with me was able to self harm and the next time I saw her, from wrist to elbow was bandaged up. I was having a bad reaction to the new medication The Ranch put me on and requested to be brought to see the nurse. I was told I had to wait 2 hours (until activities were done) before they could take me to see the nurse. After sitting there for 1.5 hours I got up, went outside and walked to the nurses station (The Pine) which was approximately 0.5 miles. No one even knew where I was until I walked into the nurses center. I checked myself out that same day because it was obvious they did not have my best interests in mind.

I am, and will always be eternally grateful for my time at The Ranch. Rewind to 2012. I had lost all faith in myself, and life itself. I didn\'t want to live any longer. The Ranch quite literally saved my life. I had hated myself for so long, I didn\'t even know if self love was possible. Don\'t get me wrong-- it wasn\'t a comfortable process. I went to The Ranch several years ago. I came from a state where you could only get rehab type help in state if you were a drug addict or alcoholic. The Ranch was the only facility I could find that I could afford, that took my insurance, and that would take me in for PTSD treatment with no addiction component. I ended up having a 2 month stay. For me personally, it was the best decision I ever made for my mental health. I had been doing therapy for several years with little to no improvement. You have to be in the right frame of mind for this type of rehab to work. If you aren\'t willing to admit your issues and to change, this place will not help you. But in all fairness no place would help you if you don\'t want help or don\'t want to change. Not because the people aren\'t qualified, but because you won\'t really be doing the work. You have to walk the walk not just talk the talk. Being in a safe and supported environment with a variety of therapies was exactly what I needed. The facility is beautiful. The people amazing. Reading some of the other reviews I think people were thinking this was supposed to be a vacation spot. Zip line. Yes there is one. Do you use it whenever you want? No. It is done in a therapeutic lesson that is done in rotation. At least that\'s how it was when I was there. Horses. Yes. Everyone gets equine therapy. If you want to just do horse rides for relaxation yes that is extra. Just like acupuncture or massage. It\'s a form of treatment so yes it costs money. It\'s not an all inclusive day spa. The point being if those are things you want or think would be beneficial, there is access for you. Just as DBT, EMDR, and various other therapies. If the food sucked, it\'s because you are a bad cook as the houses make their own food. Afterall in real life at home you make your food right? As for going outside, everyone can go outside every day, several times a day. Once a week is a down day/outing type thing where you go shopping or to the movies or whatever your house has planned. If you\'re wanting a life change, and you\'re willing to do the work, this is the kind of place you could really benefit from. I am forever grateful for the staff at The Ranch and all the work they helped me do.

I have complex ptsd and went into crisis after the death of my father. I was assured by Elements that the Ranch would be an ideal place for me to safely grieve and heal. I was led to believe I would have lots of therapy, horseback riding, exercise, and different healing opportunities. Reality? I had one individual therapy session a week. I never got to ride horseback once in four weeks. Instead doing barn chores was considered a privilege. Anyone who wanted energy work or acupuncture for natural mood stabilization had to go on a waiting list; in 4 weeks I had one energy session despite requesting it every week. I was locked up, denied privacy, and was even bullied on more than one occasion by RAs and other clients. I did my best to make the most of my time there, but the pressures caused me to have several dissociative episodes. These episodes were verbal and not threatening toward others, only expressions of how upset I was as my trauma was being triggered. Instead of responding to these episodes with concern and care, the staff reprimanded and even punished me. My therapist had me complete several assignments including a timeline of my personal traumas, a daily log, and a painting. I put my all into these assignments and the therapist never even discussed them with me. By the time I finally got home and started working with a new psychologist, it was obvious that I have a severe dissociative condition, which is not uncommon for people with CPTSD. No one at the Ranch even bothered to discuss this with me. I made the best of it, but I would be lying if I didn\'t say that it was a horrible experience.

Hands down, one of the worst experiences of my life, I will preface this by saying I was not expecting this to be a “spa retreat” and was willing to put in the work to heal. My experience at the ranch was nothing like what I was told it was going to be like. I went to The Ranch in Nulley, Tennessee on 5/25/2018. If you are considering going to The Ranch for yourself or deciding on behalf of a loved one and are interested in speaking with someone who has been there recently, please feel free to message me. I am preparing a lengthy review covering my entire experience end to end, from discovering the ranch to arriving at the facility and all the research I did prior to arriving. I want to be sure to include both sides for the people reading these reviews to be able to make an informed decision on the ranch, so it’s taking me a bit of time to prepare everything but as I’ve already had a handful of people message me through the comment section on this page, I wanted to welcome anyone who might be about to head there or send a loved one there to speak to me directly since I may not be able to post the full review right away. I loved The Ranch (went there in 2010) and it was exactly where I needed to be at such a sensitive time. It helped me a lot but I\'m giving it 4 stars because I didn\'t love all of their eating disorder treatment. In the ED house we had some women who were on a weight loss program that did not present any ED symptoms other than simply being overweight which was really triggering for me to be around so many women trying to lose weight when I was trying to gain! I also think they have an inadequate view on exercise which was completely off limits except for walking about once a week at a very slow pace. My friend and I lost phone privileges because we were walking too fast and they called it \"exercise.\" Which is apparently the devil unless you\'re overweight. After The Ranch I had to teach myself that moderate, healthy exercise like strength training is actually possible and SO good for me because it helps my mood and body image tremendously, something that was simply discarded at The Ranch as being an ED behavior. Other than those two issues it was great. Family weekend totally healed my family problems, as well.

I discharged from The Ranch almost a month ago after 4 months of treatment. It was one of the hardest but most beneficial things I have ever done for myself. The staff were great, caring and supportive. The web page for The Ranch does not do it any justice. Its so much more than a treatment facility. They teach you how to do life, deal with life and to make healthy life choices without drugs, ETOH or for me, without needing self harm. I was not a number at The Ranch, I was and I am Marie. The staff in Mill house, DBT therapist, spirituality, the rec barn, alone with my entire treatment I learned skills to live life. I no longer just \"survive\" but I get to make my own choices, I have choices. I don\'t always have to like them but at least I know I have them. I still have learning and growing to do but because of The Ranch, I am here on earth to do it. They don\'t tell you it will be easy because I know it wont but I now have the skills to \"deal with it\" and see myself through the other side. DBT and the life skills I take with me everyday from DBT has had one of the biggest impacts. I continue to attend weekly DBT and use the skills every single day! The best part, really, is that I am alive to do it. It was very expensive, and I will struggle with the financial component for a while but having a life worth living is priceless.

I went to the ranch with a very open mind and was ready to surrender myself to the process of healing. We were told several things such as, all medications used for treatment would be included in the overall price. This was NOT TRUE. I was charged $1000 for meds the second day I was there. The zip line, no where to be found. Pool, can\'t be used because it\'s only at the men\'s sex addiction house. Canoes...nope....horse back riding....yes but will cost you! Once you are in your selected house you get to go outside 1 day a week. It\'s like selling cars. They will say anything to get you there. Most of the nurses were awesome and understanding. The pictures on the website are all actors. It looks nothing like that. SUCH A DISAPPOINTMENT!!! Food....terrible, no chef or nutritionist. State of the art work out facility? Nope, a room with a treadmill and a few weights that we never got to use. It was a living nightmare actually. Also we paid cash, one of the girls with me did also, they gave her a 50% discount from what we paid!!! This place is a scam. Save your money please. Please please. One disappointment after another. On a positive note the nurses and RA\'s get 5 stars. They were great....unfortunately all the lies and empty promises make their jobs much harder!!!

The Ranch - Well this magical place simply saved my life and they loved me until I could be taught to love myself again. I found everyone of the staff to be kind, caring, compassionate and completly understanding of the hopeless state of mind and body I was in. My treatment was administered by an amazing team of professionals: Doctor\'s, Nurse Practitioner, RA\'s, Instructors, EMDR Specialists and Therapist who all played a very specific and integral role in my recovery. I don\'t want to brag - Oook yeah I do - but not only did I have the best Treatment Team at the Ranch I also had the greatest Primary Therapist to every walk upon the face of this earth period......... I seriously think I may have seen angel wings on this guy as well as a Halo. In all seriousness this man literally reached into my soul, grabbed my problems by the roots, and helped me to safely navigate through processing the most difficult traumas of my life. That takes an enormous amount of courage.” - Bessel van der Kolk I will keep fighting for my girls and others who were harmed and suffered additional trauma or re-traumatization while in recovery. @therecoveryranch and @promises_bh told us we would be in safe houses, have safe care teams, consistent therapy and process groups. None of that occurred. Trauma Recovery: A Horror Story a thread. In an email today @oprah talks about those who are at their darkest moments, the need to both recognize and speak up (link in bio). Body Brokers recently was released, a scathing, honest tale of the billion dollar rehab/recovery industry- which I just got a terrifying taste of-after finally recognizing the darkness of complex trauma endured for 40 years. The courage required to just ask for help is monumental. Being grossly re-traumatized at a #recovery place is horrendous. To understand they are apathetic, dishonest, and inconsistent is to relive trauma in the present. So I’m going to begin sharing everything that happened and pray one person is positively impacted. The global pandemic #covid_19 #corona has caused cases of suicide, domestic violence and child abuse-including those leading to death, depression, anxiety, related disorders, and TRAUMA, to soar in numbers never seen before. More than ever, mental health care needs to be safe, honest, consistent, and empathetic. Trauma informed care, especially, needs utilization, as it’s the source of addiction, autoimmune disorders, and the utter exhaustion of flight/fight/freeze/fawn. The last time any reformation laws were executed was the 1970s and we desperately need new laws as penalties in place immediately. Even @potus and his family have suffered the negative effects, relapse, further harm from inadequate and ineffective care. It’s time for new, now. At the end of 2020 I was, like many, struggling with the ongoing effects of the pandemic. The holidays brought the final straw, and this broken camel desperately began seeking help. My first stop was a well known place near Chicago. While it had a success rate, it was not the right place for me: I witnessed physical violence between staff and clients, self harm that went unaddressed, and I was locked into the dorms- this is not ok for a gal who was once held hostage and raped in every possible manner for 8 hours- I left on the third day. Upon returning home from the first recovery place, my anxiety was worse than ever and it was compounded with fear of choosing the next facility. My advocate recommended places in AZ and TN. After researching and conversations, I decided on a @promises_bh center in TN made famous by @drphil I was told nothing like what happened in my first experience would ever happen here, there is equine and trauma therapies-most important at that time was that I could drive, if I needed to leave. Arriving i felt welcome, everything was explained to me, I was calming down. Near my room another girl was having an exceptionally difficult time, she became my friend through shared experience. The following day, Friday, I had my evaluations done and was moved to a temporary house, small but filled with lovely, funny ladies. Starting here, I’ll forego painstaking details, but beginning that evening things went downhill rapidly: I got a migraine that was t terrible and had to beg to get my meds (I threw up and nearly passed out); Saturday- same migraine, can’t get meds, yelled out for being in bed, medical permission for me to be sick. That evening feeling better but still not great, I use my cane to go outside, talk with the girls. Ready to go inside, I misstep, pivot on my left foot, come crashing down, my foot swollen, right side of my body, and chest bruised as scratched. No one from staff checks on me once. My new friend did. Sunday, three girls and I move into our house- we’re told it’s trauma specific. Sunday brought delight with a new face, but concerns with the lack of information and gross inconsistencies with the little we had, at day 4 no one had received any therapy or even met our therapists, and the lack of food- a concern as we all had dietary needs. Women seeking help for trauma are incredibly courageous yet deeply vulnerable. True trauma informed care seeks too acknowledge and understand triggers, it leans heavy on truth, consistency, a schedule/ plan in advance- we hate surprises, and heaps of genuine compassion and empathy. Trauma therapies like EMDR are intense and exhausting, often requiring a nap or a hug after. At a time where women are finally breaking their silence of the atrocities suffered with #metoo and the impact of trauma from childhood on #ptsd #cptsd and mental health finally breaking through the sigmas of the ignorant and fearful, one would think a place named @promises_bh could offer the basics of humanity, if not trauma informed. Come Monday the treatment we received saw all of us contemplate leaving, one did leave, and three top administrators at our house for hours. Not what anyone expected of the top, nor did anyone expect it to get worse. But it did. I refuse to take shit any longer. After four decades of silence of the abuse, family scapegoat, violence, and manipulations in my birth family, my rape, the gaslighting and manipulations of my ex, I’m no longer ok with being quiet about abuse. What happened @promises_bh @therecoveryranch was intentional neglect, abuse, lies, and violations of all rights. I have not had it easy, but I’ve sought help every step of Beginning about age six my molesters played a “game” where I was blindfolded, told “trust me,” and forced to give and receive sexual acts. While as residential care, after two days of expressing that I felt unsafe, I was intentionally sent back into that trauma, being told “you only get out what you put in.” My body stopped going, other girls were returned to trauma response as well, all for the metaphorical expression of asking for help. I was never asked what was wrong or what triggered me, not once. The therapist director was informed I was reacting because of a woman in our house, which was expressly untrue. But since I wasn’t asked, she cashed my husband @diggler001 and lied to him. I was falsely accused of cussing out aBHT, which I didn’t do and would have been justified if I did. #i was in absolute trauma, reacting in breakdown, and had to beg, literally, and then get permission to use the phone to call my husband. I was told to get up and join group, I was told I would have to go to medical, then I was abruptly woken up after finally calming down and asked about meds, even though I said I could not talk at the time. And it didn’t end. To this day they have refused to mail my belongings back to me, which they were in control of. I’ve been promised to get a call back and it’s never happened. @drphil is this what you expect from the facility you send your clients to? Is it ok that the primary therapist shared personal information, and continues to till this day, to other clients? Or that BHTs were allowed to gossip with patients about other patients? In January 2021, a number of courageous women gathered all their strength and admitted to themselves and their families that their #cptsd #ptsd was impacting them greater than they alone could handle. Individually @therecoveryranch @promises_bh was our choice, well researched, we held hope in promises of 1-1 therapies, equine, experiential, and more. We bonded as a group in our collective trauma, but even greater in our willingness to heal through facing our trauma. Everyone made mention what a unique group we were, supportive of one another, truly honored to share our time in healing, resilience. It quickly changed, however. The untruths and inconsistencies were almost immediate- one friend so mistreated she left after day one in our house. I left early because I knew I was not safe after EMDR, a treatment that is intense and often needs downtime after. It got worse, especially if you were not liked, vocal, or shut d down from me traumas. Half of us, at least, came out worse for the wear. So, we know there are more. We are inviting others to share, speak up, raise our voices. We invited the media to join us in questioning the ethics and morality so lacking in our care. We invite politicians of every level to stand with us in seeking reform. An industry worth billions should be held accountable, changes not seen since the 1970s need to happen immediately. Trauma is at an all time high globally, information and education are readily available. We invite the big corporate giants of mental health care to stand and commit to providing more than adequate care, rather than insurance checks and abrupt dismissal.

I've never been to treatment before and I'll likely never be able to go again. This was my one opportunity to attend a residential treatment to deal with my PTSD. I am sad that I chose The Ranch. Let me start by saying that all of these five star reviews cannot be real. The timing is suspicious and they all seem to say the same thing. The house I was in was dated, in mediocre shape and not very clean. The vans they cart you around in are extremely rundown and difficult to get into and out of if you have any physical limitations. I believe the entire operation is short staffed. There was one therapist for the entire house which held up to 10 people. My roommate told me there are usually only three people for each therapist. I liked my therapist but she wasn't licensed. Many times she simply read from a handout during our daily group session. Needless to say this is not the most effective way to teach a topic. I don't know what the qualifications are for any of the staff since it is not posted anywhere or available on request. I know the 24 hour nurse was simply an LPN. I believe that should be at least an RN level. The BHTs have no training and there are no educational requirements. Not even sure that they require a GED. However they are one of the best parts of the program because I think they genuinely care. I feel that they need to be trained in a few areas like HIPAA and sensitivity training. Basically there are 2 - 2 hour groups a day. One day has a three hour experiential group. The two hour afternoon groups are mostly psychoeducation and two hours is just too long and the groups are too large to be effective. It makes for a long day. The case manager dropped the ball on many of the girls I was in the home with, myself included. We had to cook our own food and some of the residents never wanted to help. It was extremely frustrating. Rather than cooking and cleaning I think our time should have been spent getting better. I chose this place for the equine therapy and it's such a tiny part of the week I think the name "The Ranch" is intentionally misleading. Don't be fooled. I also chose The Ranch because I thought I would be getting intense trauma therapy treatment. You don't get a trauma session until your second week. The trauma therapy was good and very helpful but I think we should get a session immediately upon admitting since we only get three or four weeks total. Everything was behind. I saw the nutritionist the week I left so she only had time to do the intake. I left at three weeks and was told that my insurance denied me a fourth week. When I got home I called my insurance to ask why they denied me and they told me that there were never any clinicals submitted and The Ranch never asked for me to stay a fourth week. I was truly ready to go home after three weeks because I just couldn't take another week of the boring groups. However, I was considering staying a fourth week so I could have another trauma session and another session with the nutritionist. I was on the fence so when they told me I was denied I went home but feel I left too early. I think another week would have benefited me. I was extremely emotional and unsteady when I got home. I left without an IOP to transition to. This is because the case manager dropped the ball. it is not easy to go from residential down to nothing. I have been out for four days and it's been very challenging. I had to find my own IOP program. Several of the other residents had been to previous Treatment Centers and pointed out what was wrong with the ranch. Several people left against medical advice while I was there due to the poor quality of care. Also upon admission they make you sign an arbitration agreement which means you cannot take them to court you must arbitrate, which tells me they likely get sued a lot. Please do your research and get everything in writing before you check yourself in somewhere. Unfortunately, I do not recommend The Ranch.
