There seems to be an overload of patients assigned to the doctors which is why it’s hard to see the doctor when you need to. Doctors are over worked in my opinion. I’ve had good and bad experiences with the VA. The patient advocates do try to help resolve issues. Overall I’ve had a fair experience So far but I can see how others may not. I have a fantastic compassionate doctor I hope she doesn’t go anywhere soon she’s the reason I’m giving the VA three stars.

Valet parking takes up way too much space causing elderly vets to circle into 4 lane traffic over and over. Some departments are disrespectful on their phones and sitting for hours. We sat 4 hours waiting to get a catheter out to get sent hours away and come back the next day. Lost his paperwork for months and had to get another appt. Eye Dr lost his stuff to. Dr Hare and cancer staff are great. Dr Walters is awesome too. The emergency staff is great to. The lab is very good and the staff in general has stepped up in less horse play and jumps to help find of get wheelchairs. We go several times a month.

Today I spent several hours with my son who was having chest pain in the Emergency Department and in Nuclear Medicine. We got in fast. He was seen immediately. Everyone was extremely nice and very professional. The place was clean and orderly. I was extremely satisfied with the treatment he received there today.

After using the VA In Memphis during the 1980's, during which time my ability to tolerate the disrespectful attitudes, the lack of concern for patients as well as the excessive wait time at almost each department were pushed to the limits, I stopped using the VA. In the early 90's I tried again, but again I was disappointed. However, about two years ago I tried once more. The change in the Memphis VA from the 80's and 90's was not just a marked improvement, it was remarkable! The employees are nice, they actually work to help you! Even in the hallways they stop and help people who look confuse to find their way. Like all other modern hospitals, you are in charge of your healthcare. Which means you should ask questions and keep track of your needs. The VA helps you with the red government tape so you get the best care. I am proud to say I use them for my care. I am happy I tried again and I plan to continue using the Memphis VA for my health needs!

Most of the people try to do a good job. There are a couple of clinics I have had a problem with and if it was serious the patient Advocates actually got something done about it. I think they are trying to turn things around . A lot less waiting in the pharmacy! Most of the clinics too! But some have had people retire and hiring at the VA isn’t like hiring at a hamburger place. It takes a lot more screening and time. I am trying to be patient while they are going through their changes. I think they are trying. Give them a chance.

The parking is a nightmare, they block off half of it pretty much forcing you to valet. Parking attendant directed me down a lane that had no spots and like many other rows was barricaded at the end. So w my bad back I had to move barricades to get out and have my mom drive though same attendant starts yelling that we are holding up traffic. One doc said my dad would be released first thing this morning and others have a different opinion. Been waiting on a 3rd MRI for over 24 hours now. Been sitting at hospital all day and will have to drive back to Michigan tonight. Our veterans deserve better please figure out parking. So many handicapped veterans have to park in regular spots.

You get 2 stars. It would be 1, and it used to be 4. Why? Because you cared for Mr. Owens with good care. Yet my husband waits 6 months to even get an appointment, and only because we contacted our state representative. Then, we wait 3 months for the appointment. The appointment is Friday. Today we get a call canceling his appointment. I’ll give the doctor the benefit of the doubt. However, there is absolutely NO reason to not fit that doctors patient’s into other doctors schedule. No.......So when the messenger VA lady called and told me this and the. Asked if we could reschedule I said “No. we wait 9 months for this and I would very much like if you would just fit him in with another doctor on Friday.” Which is not what I wanted to say, but she was just the messenger for a horribly run government facility. The messenger said she would ask the doctors and call back. You guessed it. Still waiting on that call.

As a military retiree using TRICARE I can tell you my primary care experience at the Memphis VA is much better than what I experienced out in the community. I also had open heart surgery (mitral valve repair) at the Memphis VA and my care was outstanding. Out in the community they would have placed a mechanical valve which would have placed me on blood thinners the rest of my life. At the Memphis VA they repaired the mitral valve. My advice to those who have problems with appointments or refilling prescriptions need to sign up for myhealthyvet secure messaging. You can refill medications and send a message to your doctor. With the new parking garage coming this August parking should get better. Memphis VA is moving in the right direction with this new director.
