This place is awful. I was forcefully put in there when I was 16. I had undiagnosed Bipolar 1 Disorder. They treated me like I was a criminal rather than a person. During therapy, my therapist told my family and I that I was a waste of space and would never get any better. Told me I was going to spend my life in prison. I'm now 19 years old, married, have a son and couldn't be happier. I still have a huge fear of hospitals of any kind and absolutely refuse therapy or counseling. It traumatized me and I will forever be different. Parents, if you're looking to send your child here, please don't. It really does nothing but damage their self esteem even more and make them care even less about life. It would be more worth your time and money to actually sit them down and figure out whatever needs figured out rather than having strangers who don't give a damn do it.

100% would not recommend. My best friend went there for a few months and came back 10 times worse. I almost got put there myself for suicidal thoughts and depression and heard nothing but bad news. Just the thought of being taken from my friends and somewhere they treat like a phsyco makes me feel more depressed than I am to start.

I had one of the staff repeatedly make fun of my behavior (I'm diagnosed with ADHD) and threated to put me in solitary. I also have very heavy periods and was on birth control at the time to keep me from going anemic. I ran out of birth control and a male staff said "you can afford to have one period." I swear I bled through every pair of pants I had. The started giving bipolar meds when I have NEVER BEEN DIAGNOSED which caused me to have severe migraines and made me LACTATE

I was treated like an animal. I was not aloud to talk to or even sit by some of the other patients. They did not care when patients treated other patients unkindly. You are not aloud to sleep alone. Always being watched even if you werent there for suicide or depression. Most terrible place you can ever send your child. Being there made me 100% worse than before i was admitted.

This place was awful they never let u talk to anyone or associate with anyone other than the staff. If u made friends u would get introuble. I stayed there for a bout a week and all they would do was complain about how much they hated their job. They made u feel like u were crazy or not mentally stable. They judged u for hurting yourself and made u feel so depressed and angry. Moral of the story THIS IS NOT A GOOD PLACE FOR KIDS. Let me tell you my story. I was in their short-term program, not their residential program. I stayed there from the early morning of the 7th of November, 2018, to the 13th of November. Almost every single one of the one and two star ratings for this place that I’ve seen are true. In my case, the food was pretty good, and I don’t mind thin blankets, despite how cold it was at night. Everybody was medicated; some received multiple pills a day to “cure” their illnesses. I had hallucinations, both audible and visual, substance abuse issues, major depression, self harm, and suicidal ideation, and I was given 20 mg of Prozac daily. I will not argue against the opinion of a professional, but it seems as if one is either given next to nothing and told that they’re fine, or they’re given three, four, five, or more types of medication. They would gather us around a table at the end of the day and ask us what medications we were on, to ensure our memorization (and I’m sure to be compliant with state codes), and I can guarantee that at least half of my fellow inmates didn’t or couldn’t know what they were taking. Every door was locked, every corner was filmed, and every person was checked off by a supervisor every fifteen minutes. It wasn’t appealing whatsoever; almost any sort of comfort one has is stripped away. Mine were getting a book halfway through my stay, wearing my own clothes instead of the paper-thin scrubs, and writing. I saw some incredibly talented people there that happened to be down on their luck, and in need of assistance. I couldn’t give any, because we were consistently told to “focus on our own recovery” rather than helping others. After all, if we’re broken, we certainly can’t help another person, can we? And don’t expect any sort of intellectual stimulation. You’re sat down in front of a screen for half the day, in front of a counselor for the other half, with a few breaks for recreation in-between. Some of the people I saw were a year younger than I was, and couldn’t spell. They possessed serious educational hindrances, not being entirely their fault, and received no help for it whatsoever. The therapists, while almost certainly holding a degree or degrees in various sciences relating to the study of human behavior and the mind, were ineffective. To be frank, they were absolute jokes. One of them continually reminded us that it was our own fault that we were in a psychiatric institution, and that we had to completely change ourselves to become fixed. I don’t know whether or not the message was taken to heart by anyone else, but I couldn’t. The goal at Heartland, as we were repeatedly told, is for each individual to analyze and focus on their mental recovery. If that is the case, in most instances, it is counterproductive to one’s mental health to stay here. Why do you want to send your child here? Is it because they have emotional issues? They will be berated and told that they need to fix themselves. Do they want to kill themselves? Absolutely don’t send them here. The word “suicide” is forbidden, and any questioning on the matter is ignored or harshly punished. Are they just depressed, and they need someone they can confide in? Let them be with their friends, or experience the beauty of nature, or get them connected to a suicide hotline or something. Anything but this damned mental hospital! There is no reason to send your child here, unless you want to be rid of them. To end on a positive note, the secretary for 2 South during the day, whose name I cannot remember, was likely the most emotionally intelligent and beneficial worker present on the floor. In addition, the only African-American worker present there, whose name I have also forgotten, was the only worker (besides the woman mentioned above) who seemed to actually enjoy his job, and helped me keep my sanity. Although I am guilty of not remembering who they are, I heartily thank them both for making my stay at the hospital bearable. If they had not been there, I have no doubt that my stay would have been significantly extended. - Dashiell Tucker

Couldn’t be happier with the treatment my daughter received at Heartland. She was there for several months in their residential treatment facility. The staff were top notch from our experience. From the floor staff to the school staff to the nurses to the Psychiatrist. Couldn’t have asked for more than what we received our daughter went in an extremely troubled girl who we were afraid we were going to lose and came home with an entirely different attitude filled with respect for herself as well as for us as her parents. Her therapist was out of this world I don’t know how she did what she did but she was truly able to really make breakthroughs that we never would have imagined being possible. Our daughter is someone we truly enjoy being around and we could not have gotten to this place without the role Heartland played. I know previous reviews state that the patients are not allowed to keep touch with each other after their discharge but I do not find that to be true because my daughter made friends that she does keep touch with who have also discharged. Matter of fact she met her best friend while in Heartland and they are able to keep touch and bounce things off of each other to help keep them both going in the right direction to accomplish the goals they set for themselves. I also was very impressed that Heartland did not overuse medication. From our previous experience it is quite common for facilities to use PRN medications to assist in treatment or rather sedate the patients. Prior to taking my daughter to Heartland I spoke with multiple intake staff to get information and one of my key things I was worried about is the overuse of medication. Maybe it helped that I brought up my concerns from the very beginning but I did not feel that medication was pushed on my daughter at all. She was prescribed only what was necessary for treatment of her diagnosed condition. For us Heartland was a life changing experience but it took a lot of work on both our daughter and our part. When a child is suffering with mental health conditions those conditions do not only affect the child they affect the entire family and Heartland does require that parents/guardians play an active role in treatment.

My son was noncompliant at home. Having major behavior issues. Everyone said send him to Heartland! We did. They sent him right back saying there was nothing they could do. Oh, and he got his very first girlfriend in there. Quite handsy, the two of them. Oh the things kids will do when left unattended. Don't waste your time.

My daughter was there for 6 weeks in residential. We live 6 hours away from Nevada but the staff made sure to keep me informed on her care and included me in therapy sessions once a week and the weekly team meeting as well as daily phone calls and even paid for my gas to come see her on the weekends. I highly recommend them. When my daughter arrived at heartland she had been to 5 other facilities... I had lost almost all hope. But now two months later after my daughters discharge I have seen improvement. She has not cut her arms up once and while she still has things she is working on (its a process that is going to take time) heartland made a big impact on her emotional and behavioral issues. She left there with skills that she did not have before.

My son was there for four months. He got there very messed up mentally with major depression. He was very disrespectful just to say the least. Four months later he came home a completely revolutionalized young man. He is back to normal and it’s absolute unbelievable! Kori the counselor was very proactive with me to keep me posted and the whole staff were very personable and very helpful! I can’t thank them and God enough! On a serious note. Don't send your kids here. Mental abuse, makes the kids feel worse. Absolute trash. This is coming from a person who has been here and as their friend I can say that I help more than this trash place does.

The staff is extremely rude, especially while on the phone. Called 3 times in one day and didn’t get to talk to him once and just kept saying call back and finally told me that I didn’t get to speak to him for a couple days with no reason why.

Didn't like one of the new Dr's they hired because she is Medicaid scammer! She did Psychiatric evaluation for my now 12 year old daughter and now 11 year old daughter that they needed in court so they wouldn't have to testify in person against a monster who abused them! Lobe everything else about Heartland but they need to fire Dr. Pherrell she has tons of work that was billed to Medicaid but never completed that she done while at Center for Life Coaching and Councilling in Aurora Mo!

I went to Heartland for five months. It was the best thing my parents ever did for me. The staff were amazing! kind and helpful. My therapist was absolutely stunning. She helped me through thick and thin. The cooks there were amazing and cooked good food. The experience really changed my life. The DBT groups and the skills provided. I would recommend anyone, who is struggling or in need of some assistance, to go to Heartland. Truly changed my life.

I loved heartland when I stayed there. They have strict rules and guidelines to follow and it's really hard at first. There is always a kid or two that will do anything to get out. The staff were hard but they cared. If I had something scary I needed to tell them.they were ready to be there. When I went there over a year ago, I was a mess. Now I'm getting married to an amazing man tomorrow. Thank you heartland :)

I met some of the most interesting and amazing people at heartland. Not the rude staff, but the other kids locked away with me. There was a girl who had been there for seven months who had faded dyed hair and loved Gerard Way. There was a boy, the most talented boy I'd ever met, who could drum with his hands and make it sound like a professional drumset. There was a girl who rambled about her ex boyfriend and getting in fights, who fell head over heels with a boy running away from his family and his job at Sonic. There were so many more people but I don't have the space to tell you about them. I'm posting this because they won't let us stay in contact with each other. I have to live every day with the fact that I might never see those kids again. And it tears me up. So, my name is Evelyn and if you knew me in Heartland please message me somehow.

This place practically (physically and emotionally) ruined me. They LET this bitch beat my ass, and the moronic staff member who was on duty took forever to get someone to restrain her, and the people who came to the assist practically waddled over and asked a bit too politely for this crazy hoe to release me, while she had me by the throat knocking my head against the metal table. Some of the staff are cool(Whitney, Tracy, Kyla, Amanda, Trenton, Susan, Kendall!!!!), but there are quite a few that are simply idiotic and are just in it for the money. But still, I'm thankful for the good staff, and at the end of the day, it fulfilled it's promises stated on the brochure- they changed my life.
