I was sent to Pine Grove for an inpatient substance abuse evaluation in 2010. I was sent by a medical board from another state. Everything went fine and they found no substance abuse. However--when reviewing my background records sent to them by a medical board--they did not verify the records and took them at face value. Their ultimate report was based on completely false information sent to them by the medical board, and they refused to change their report. I verified the information was false. The report was written by one Ed Anderson, who spent maybe 45 minutes with me prior to writing the evaluation. It was also based on the MMPI personality test battery, which must be administered in a quiet, private location for it to be valid. This Anderson character just handed it to me and told me to fill it out in my spare time in the resident cabins--where there was no privacy at all and TVs and stereos were playing all the time. Nevertheless--although invalidated by the test conditions--he still included it in my report. So, he included a false test in my report and also quoted a false report from my medical board--although I proved it was fake. This center is a joke.

I am a medical professional and came to the Physicians Health Program asking for help. I was enrolled in this monitoring program through my state. They only allow approved 3 rehabilition centers based on where the PHP staff had gone themselves; not what is more qualified. This is important because of how the program works. They say that "you have a choice not to do what we ask but you wont be in the medical field anymore". This is understandable due to the responsibilities we have, but within the last several years, this absolute power is being abused with lucrative kick back and "scratching each others' backs". Ill keep this short. I was told to go to treatment at Pine Grove. During the 14 weeks there, I only found out my check out date 3 days before I left. I want to elaborate on the experiences I had, but for a review, its too long. - The staff is unbelievably unqualified. The highest degree that a staff member held at "Next Step" (the chemical addiction tx) was an LPN. That was one person. The people on the site who seem to be qualified do not interact with you. - I have a severe food allergy that I shared with them months before and multiple times. They would say "tomorrow Ill try and put something together" and on and on. I didnt eat anything but apples and soda for 14 days. It ended when I asked for a third party advocate to come in. - "Next Step" supplies food but calling it prison grub is flattering. - They cut costs on everything that matters and everything that doesnt ie) when I was there, they were about to have an alumni event. 12k was spent on landscaping just around where it was to be held. - 6 weeks in I was made to go to "PEP" which if you have a chance, go there. As far as my peers and I were concerned, it was adult babysitting. Without the activities or learning. Boredom is an understatement. - PEP was nice because at Next Step, you're not allowed to leave two small cottages on campus. - The entire experience was extremely abusive. The staff members believe in 1970's addiction theory. Publicly humiliate and shame. - My best friend there killed himself two days after I left. I saw the staff systematically break him down until he had no personality or emotion. He was a shell after the public humiliation. He is dead because of them as far as I am concerned. - I had to pay over $100,000 in cash. 32 thousand a month plus all of the other charging. I ran out of money towards the end. They told me to get a personal medical loan. If I didnt get the next 32 thousand, they would kick me out within 48 hours, and would report that I was AMA. My monitoring program said that if I couldnt continue due to financial reasons, then I wouldnt be able to continue my medical training. - Let me put it this way; I am too afraid of repercussions from Pine Grove to even give my genuine identity. I left 1 year ago. Gosh, I apologize for the rambling. It was one of the most awful experiences I ever had and my peers feel the same. What I will say is that if this is your only options, then do it. Sobriety was achieved in someone I didnt think it was possible. The "you wont be able to do it" attitude that Pine grove treated me with made me want to "show them". I could practically write a book with how crap this place was. And somehow I took sobriety out of it. I wish you luck and you really can do it. If you have a choice of Pine Grove or active addiction, go to Pine Grove. If you have a choice between HELL or this “rehab facility” choose HELL because you will be less humiliated and end up better off in the long run because burning in sulfurous flames for eternity is more desirable than rubbing elbows with these incompetent greedy uncaring twisted dehumanizing sadomasochistic “ healthcare providers “. The program is a thinly veiled sham whose sole purpose is to fleece your insurance ( to the tune of $130,000 a pop) and bring you in a every 6 months in a revolving door fashion for reevaluation, which appears to never end [until your insurance runs out]. I was there for six months until my insurance ran out then Wala I was immediately discharged. So let’s go over some specific facets of their approach which their expensive marketing team have omitted from their marketing lies. You are kept locked up like a murderer for most of the stay and when you are allowed to go to Walmart for basic human needs 2-4 weeks into the stay you go linked together in groups of 4 with everyone in the store whispering and pointing as you “shop”. After you shop they inspect everything you bought and throw away all dangerous contraband [like freshly cut flowers]. They occasionally give you a big night out by pulling you up to local restaurants and announce to everyone that addicts are going to be eating here and only let you enter as the last people are asked to leave and then parade you out of the bus with everyone looking at you with judgment and disgust. Moms pulling their children out of your path and telling them not to get close to you. They stop your meds, which I can’t prove but I’m certain led directly to my heart attack. They play favorites with the patients and basically give their pets ( which I noticed just happen to be young females with good insurance or money) the bully pulpit to verbally attack you , unchecked, in your 2-3x/d “‘community meetings” Their pets appear to be the ones with deep pockets like one little blond who was there for pimping out all the girls in her sorority to be prostitutes but her daddy had deep pockets so she had been there several YEARS and was the leader of the show In community meeting allowed to verbally abuse and accuse anybody of anything without proof and was never held accountable. $$$$$$$ Their approach is to first ABSOLUTELY BREAK YOU EMOTIONALLY and make you dependent on them and their program( which you basically don’t ever get to leave……until you are broke and can’t pay. Every time you are in group you start with “ Hi I’m Brad and I’m a sex addict I’m addictied to mastrubation, lust, porn, etc etc. One of their wonderful tactics is to let you earn the right to eg plant flowers and when they see that you enjoy it cut off that privilege, instruct the other patients not to water the plants you’ve poured your heart into, and revel in the misery you are in watching your hard work wither and die. They tape demeaning signs to your back , which you can’t see but their pets can and laugh and snicker as you pass absolutely unchecked by staff. They don’t allow you to exercise until they drive you up to the gym in the van and link you together in 4s and parade you in in front of everyone to humiliate you ( part of their way of breaking you). They give you regular polygraph tests for which they make you pay $600/ test, ask all sorts of unrelated very personal questions and then share it with the group for their own sick pleasure. They regularly toss your room looking for contraband necessitating you reorganizing your entire personal belongings and stand there grinning watching you. Another of their myriad of their sick satanic behaviors. I could go on for pages but I believe that you get the idea. They dangle you discharge in front of you, knowing full well that you’re not really finished with you. When you do run out of money they have to ok EVERYTHING you will do when you leave and if you can’t prove compliance they start you back at square one [ that way they get their next payday] They have to approve EVERY FACET of your new life, which mandatorily includes at least 1-2 12 step meetings PER DAY [documented by signatures from the group leader], pre approval of EVERY CAR ROUTE you are allow to take to your new job, which they have to approve as well but often don’t. EG I wanted to drive shrimp up from the gulf to sell which they denied because it would be Too Triggering. I submitted 14 different potential jobs to them… all denied. To be more absurd , if you are ever lucky enough to get out you are given a” Care plan” usually involving years of living in a locked monitored half way house requiring sign in and out[ which I suspect that they also own]. If you do get a job you have to inform EVERYONE IN THE OFFICE that you are a eg Sex Offender and have then have each coworker fill out weekly evaluations stating that you have not tried to touch them, come onto them etc. NOW THESE ARE THE PEOPLE YOU WORK WITH EVERYDAY! Total humiliation! The aftercare program they mandated for me, even though I could never get them to agree to acceptable employment for me cost over $100,000/ year[ I don’t know how much of that went to them] If you want to , let’s say , innocently touch someone’s arm during a conversation, you must first ask them…” May I touch you?” That’s not creepy at all, is it. I could make this post 10Xs this long and still not hit all of the issues In summary , if you have an addiction issue GO ANYWHERE BESIDES HERE! They will grind every molecule of humanity out of you for their own sick entertainment and profit and make you a slave in their web of manipulation and degradation. Don’t take my word for it , ask others who have lived through it, if you can get them to talk because Pine Grove threatens you if you ever divulge their secrets. At this point I have no money no life and am medically disabled , in my option , directly due to my time here. there is nothing else for them to take from me and I felt a duty to bring these facts to light in hopes that people desperately needing help with addiction to go someplace ANY PLACE else. They take people at the lowest point in their lives and suck what’s left of their lives out for their sick enjoyment and profit. PLEASE DON’T COME HERE!!!
