My daughter was here for one year and we had an amazing experience as a family. I wish parents realized that they are a huge part of their child\'s experience here. You can\'t just drop them off and expect for them to be \"fixed\". The parents need to be accountable for their actions too. Parenting a special needs child is not easy. But learning your own skills to help them is everything. Don\'t blame the child. Yes, They need help but so do YOU!

This place changed my life for the better 10 years ago when I was here. At first I was very hesitant because I had gone to a previous residential treatment center called Northwest Passage in Webster WI, which was a horrible horrible place. I originally was expecting the same treatment as I received there. But I was wrong. The staff here are genuine and kind hearted. I met some of the coolest people here and have also stayed in touch with many staff who I befriended as well. If any parent would like to reach out for any questions they may have, I made a group on Facebook called Gerard Academy that have 400 members both past and current residents, as well as some past and current staff, that will be happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have about this place. I am very grateful for Gerard and although I didn\'t see it right away, this place changed my life for the better.

gerard was very helpful i guess some other people would say it was a hell hole but after a while of being there you kind of build relationships with the staff and its a great expierience i guess what i told myself the whole time i was there was treatment is what you make it and if you make or think its bad then its going to be bad and if you think its going to be great then its going to be great you cant walk through it alone gerard wont let you but if you refuse their help then there is no other way you can have a chance to get better i just wanted to say thank you to lynn smithwick and cherbourg staff and veda dahl for always being there for me and teaching me th importance of having good and healthy realtionships i also wanted to thank cherboug/ chateau/ marseille staff robin mittag she/you are an amazing help that got me thrue my obsticles and i very well apreiciate i also wanted to reconize andrea (the front dask lady) for helping me when i didnt feel the best thank you so much, gerard is a great help in those of peoples lives if they just decide to let people in and if you cant then you will get there eventually it was very hard for me to leave because i had a secret relationship with a peer and i fet very safe there. gerard was a home for me when i didnt have one and my peers where like my famiy even though we got on each others nerves we still managed to get along i learned life isnt always gonna be perfect but when you have support and love and caring people it sure is good enough. i was ther for 2 years and it was a struggle at times i fell in love with the fact that i thaught i could stay there for ever but i came to the realization that i couldnt i wouldnt be here today were i am at if it wasnt for any of these people thank you very much. My therapist there thought i wouldn\'t last long in a foster home and that I would not be successful. I am proud to say that i am very successful, I am now a junior in high school and I play basketball and I float between c squad, JV, and Varsity. I did my internship for my Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology at a behavioral modification academy. As a graduate student, you can't be picky with your choices so when I was accepted I took it. This was the summer, fall, and winter, of 2012 at Gerard Academy in Austin, MN. The levels of abuse at Gerard were not as extreme as these brave women are reporting from their experiences. However, they are run like cults. The therapists are forced to follow strict guidelines which they are not allowed to deviate from in anyway. The therapists purposely insulate themselves from how the children are being treated away, from therapy. I personally witnessed attack or "confrontational" therapy twice. I was myself traumatized by what I saw. Literally it was like a dog fighting pit, with therapists and staff goading the children with sharpened sticks. I refused to work in that unit once that happened, and changed to a different age group. I confronted staff about forcing children to sit for hours on end without being able to utter a word. I was basically told "Your an intern, STFU." I also confronted the director about basic psychological principles that he clearly was misusing/abusing, which got me nowhere. Children were mainly sent there for reasons stemming directly from parental overreach (neglect or abuse), or simple things like accessing porn. The Psychiatrist's gave blanket diagnoses for every child, and thus gave everyone the same meds... The Psychiatrists were all of the old guard and not open to any research, or new information from their days being trained in the 70's. At the time I was at Gerard every child had "Asperger's." Returning to the cult theme: The tests, measurements, and metrics used for treatment plans were treated like the Scripture. Even though they lacked serious credibility, peer review, and used catch all labels and diagnoses. The founder of the school was viewed as a God. The director and governing body were treated as divinity. I once was confronted by two staff members similarly to if I had harmed one of the children. They said I used a Ghandi quote in one of my emails. I was told to apologize to the director for sharing this piece of wisdom. I never apologized... Essentially everything at the school contradicted all the undergraduate and graduate education I had received in my life. As an intern I had no agency, no efficacy, or effective means to change anything. I couldn't trust anyone, so I had to keep my mouth shut as children were misdiagnosed and maltreated. There were two people I could vent to on the campus, I couldn't trust them (they were in to deep) but I knew they wouldn't throw me under the bus. It came to the point I was literally crying periodically during writing reports and profiles... counting the days till I could leave that place, with a degree. Your probably thinking "Your a horrible person for not speaking up." I did research into reporting the school. There was ONE inspector to examine my claims, against an entire academy and the multimillion dollar conglomerate that owned several of these schools. The only result of reporting them would have been the cancelation of my internship, and the promise of never getting another one. I had worked years to get it. By the end of my internship word had gotten around campus that I had serious issues with the academy. At the end I was tired of pretending that I was doing anything good, for anyone, and everyone one could see it. Nobody would talk to me. No-one even said goodbye at my own going away "party." The day I finished my required hours I packed and took off like a bat out of hell. I just wanted to tell this story from the "other side" to lend credence to what these women are saying, it's all real. I don't even have my diploma anymore, it's worthless to me. I turned my back on the profession and I wished I had done something better with my life. I never intended to be a source of harm...

I gave them two stars. I was there for 9 months in 2004. A friend of mine that was here before me was ‘dating’ a staff member. She was a child. This means they hired a sexual predator to work with vulnerable children. My parents naively abandoned me putting all their trust in the ‘professionals’ that worked at Gerard which they shouldn’t have done. Out of desperation/limited bandwidth they pawned responsibility for me off on Nexus/an institution. Just started watching ‘The Program’ on Netflix. Way too many similarities. Like having to sleep on our thin mattresses on the floor in the halls or living room so staff could monitor us when we first arrived. Room checks all night every 15 minutes with flashlights to make sure we didn’t run. Watch ‘The Program’ before you send your kids here. Guess it’s time to do some more EMDR with my therapist to begin reprocessing my time at Gerard. If you are a parent please try every possible alternative before sending your child here. Gerard may have saved my life at the time I was sent here, but I am just beginning to process the abuse, abandonment, and gaslighting that I experienced here and was coerced into participating in. All of us kids were HEAVILY sedated to keep us compliant. Can’t imagine they stopped doing this or putting kids on ‘Safety’- for suicide risks or ‘Area’- for punishment. (When one person is assigned to it- Area is where everything is taken out of your room and a staff member is assigned to watch your every move and you are not allowed outside of your room. This can go on for days, weeks, or months). The entire girls unit was put on Area and had to sit in chairs in the Normandy living room, quiet (meaning we weren’t aloud to talk, or to get up out of our chair, or to use the bathroom- without raising our hand for permission) EVERY DAY after school for the ENTIRE summer. We didn’t get to participate in any fun outdoor summer activities. We were literal children. We dreaded the weekends. This was to punish the whole group for the behavior of a few. They had me taking Seroquel (a gnarly antipsychotic) twice a day. Even though I have Complex PTSD and not Bipolar like my Gerard therapist/psychiatrist Dr. Sandy Bucher had diagnosed and medicated me for. There was a girl on Normandy with me that had been diagnosed as schizophrenic who thought aliens were after her. Even she was lucid enough to appropriately call out staff members for being paranoid. She ended up staying for only 90 days. Nexus called this place ‘Gerard Treatment Programs’ in the 2000’s, then ‘Gerard Academy’ in the 2010’s, now in the 2020’s it’s ‘Gerard Family Healing’. 🍿 ready. Can’t wait to see what they rebrand themselves as next.
