The reason I chose to go to A Forever Recovery was because they offer the SMART Recovery program there. They do offer other programs but the SMART program was the only one I was really interested in. The SMART program is one that I hadn’t done before and I was hoping doing it would help me more than the other programs I’ve done in the past. Doing the SMART program completely changed the way I viewed addiction and recovery. After using for such a long time I wasn’t sure I’d ever get the kind of help that would make it so I didn’t ever go back to using drugs. The SMART program worked so well for me because they don’t take the view that once you’re an addict, you’re always an addict whether you’re currently using drugs or not. Instead, it’s look at as addictive behavior, which is something that you can work towards changing. That distinction made a huge difference for me. In the first part of the SMART program you have to take a realistic look at your life and how drugs have impacted it. You look at how your relationships were before drugs and how they are since then. What you’ve accomplished since starting to use and what you’d done before then. You look at your work ethic, your health, how you look at yourself and how that’s changed. Every part of your life that something that has a “before drug use” and an “after drug use” aspect to it and you compare it all. It forces you to see what drugs have done to your life and it gave me the motivation I needed to get the program done right so I could stay off drugs and make my life good again. Going through this program I learned how to recognize my triggers. I figured out which ones were riskier than others, which triggers could be avoided and which ones I wouldn’t be able to avoid and would have to deal with. It could also be something much more complicated and the complicated ones take practice to be able to deal with in the right way. For that they use role-playing during the SMART program. This part of the program was taken really seriously by the staff which helped me a lot. Role-playing can be awkward at first and a lot of people would make a joke out of it to lessen that awkwardness. The staff at AFR made sure that didn’t happen and because of that I got the practice I needed for when I got home. I’d used pills for 10 years before I went to AFR. In that time I’ve been to a few different programs. I always had a hard time staying clean afterwards, never managing for more than 6 months and times I was clean it was brutally hard to stay that way. No matter how much I wanted to. That’s because I’d continue to have the cravings and the urge to use but, without a way to deal with it. During the SMART program you figure out what works best for you as distractions for when you get the urge to use. It’s understood that you’ll continue to have the urge to use throughout your life and it’s just not workable to try to grit your teeth and battle through each and every one of those cravings. It’s too hard and you’ll eventually give in to the cravings/ I learned that for me what worked best as a distraction when I have the urge to use was to either go running or doing something artistic. It’s different for each person but, each of use learn what works for us. It’s done a lot of good since I’ve been home as I’ve always been able to distract myself through the cravings and keep myself clean, no matter how strong that craving is. My life is more balanced since going to AFR and I’ve worked hard to maintain that balance because it’s helped me stay clean. I’m eating healthier, exercising more and generally doing really well. I’ve very happy I did the SMART program at AFR. It was everything I had wanted it to be.

My brother started using cocaine almost 10 years ago. For the first 7 years of his addiction he was a binge user. He’d use over a weekend or if he was on holiday he’d go on a bender. Because of the way he used he had a normal life more or less. He had a house, his job was never in jeopardy and he always paid his bills on time. I always knew he needed to go to rehab. Most people though, which included our parents, thought that he was just partying sometimes and that he would eventually settle down and stop using. 2 ½ years ago he stopped binging and started using every day. I don’t know what changed in his life to change him from using occasionally to using every day. He never told me and ultimately it doesn’t matter. What does matter is that the way he used changed and that changed the way he lived. He stopped paying all his bills, was close to losing his house and then 2 years ago he was arrested. Getting arrested turned out to be a great thing for him. It made it so that both him and our parents couldn’t deny that he needed help another. When he called from jail our parents agreed to bail him out only if he went straight from jail to rehab. Which he agreed to. The first rehab he went to wasn’t great for him. It was mostly his fault though. He went into rehab thinking that by going to rehab he could go back to using occasionally like he had before. It’s ridiculous that he thought that way, but he was a drug addict. After finishing that first rehab he started using again that same day. After that rehab he realized that he couldn’t do that and finally understood that he needed to go through rehab the right way. The rest of the rehabs he went to he did better while he was there. When he came home though he would start using again after a week or two at most. He’d gone to 5 rehab over a 2 year period and he wasn’t doing any better after all of them. I was really excited about A Forever Recovery after our parents showed me the website and told me a bit of what the counselor they’d talked to told them. We started talking to him about it and he agreed to go to AFR 5 months ago. AFR was good for him because first, he was able to choose he own program out of the many different programs they have there. The other thing that worked out well for him was that they have staff members there who understand drug addiction and what it’s like. Not because they went to school for it or had worked in a rehab for a while, but because they have their own histories and experiences with addiction. Not every person working at AFR was an addict. There were a few though and they are the ones who made my brother feel the most comfortable about his situation. He had an easier time talking to them because of the shared experiences and that seemed to help my brother the most. He’s been home and sober since he came home 3 months ago. This is the longest he’s ever been sober since he started using cocaine all those years ago. I’m so glad our parents found A Forever Recovery and that my brother went there. It’s an amazing facility that helped him so much.

I was talking to my aftercare specialist from A Forever Recovery the other day and she asked if I’d write a few reviews for the center. I don’t talk with he all that much anymore because I don’t need to. I’ve been clean for 2 years now. That’s 2 years without having any lapses, 2 years of having control over my life and 2 years without disappointing or hurting the people I love. I can’t even begin to explain how amazing it has been. When I went to AFR I did want to get clean. I had struggled with my addiction for years and it didn’t matter what rehab I went to, what sort of program I did or how long I was there. I always relapsed within 6 months. Sometimes, it was less time and sometimes close to 6 months but never, not once did I last longer than 6 months. Until going to AFR. Before AFR I used heroin for 10 years and I was averaging 2 rehabs a year. By the time I’d turned 30 I had been to rehab over 20 times. It was horrible and depressing and every single person in my life suffered because of my addiction. It was horrible. I knew how much I was hurting people and how hard I was making their lives and I wanted more than anything to stop and yet I couldn’t stop using. The last few rehabs I’d been to, including A Forever Recovery, my parents didn’t send me with the expectation of me getting sober. Of course we all wanted that but by that time they were helping me get into rehabs because when I was in a rehab they knew where I was, they knew I wasn’t getting into any trouble and they weren’t worried about me dying. As much as I wanted to get sober, I was going for mostly those same reasons. Honestly, before I went to AFR I just knew that I’d die from an overdose at some point and I was going to rehabs just trying to hold that time off. That doesn’t mean we weren’t all hoping for some sort of magical, miracle rehab that could help me stay sober long term. Amazingly, AFR was that miracle place for me. The program I did was great and everything but it wouldn’t have mattered how good the program was if it wasn’t for the staff working there. They were actually really harsh task masters when it came to me doing my program. They didn’t let me get away with being lazy and they made absolutely sure that I did each step of my program fully. Which is something that I truly needed. I’d been to so many rehabs that I had stopped putting in much effort long before I got to AFR. The commitment the staff at AFR have towards the clients and their sobriety is something I hadn’t experienced before. They were honestly invested in making sure I and everyone else I did my program alongside were able to stay sober. They made sure I did everything I was supposed and that I did it right. I was still really scared when I got home. I knew what I needed to do and I was doing those things but I was worried about every and anything that could mess with my sobriety. Because of this I called my aftercare specialist constantly. That first month I was home I was calling her at least daily and sometimes multiple times a day. She was great with me. She was incredibly patient and understanding. She talked me through every single hiccup, problem and negative emotion I needed to deal with. So much of my sobriety today is due to the program I did and the staff who made sure that I did that program right. Just as much of my sobriety is because of my aftercare specialist and her willingness to be so completely available to me. All of my sobriety is due to my going to A Forever Recovery and the work the staff there made sure I did. It’s easy to imagine where I’d be right now if I hadn’t gone to A Forever Recovery. Instead of that, I’m alive, happy, healthy and I’m not hurting the people I love the most. I can’t thank them enough for what the staff at A Forever Recovery did for me.

I'd been using heroin for 9 years when my dad had a heart attack 5 years ago. Which the point in my life when I started caring about myself again and wanting to get sober. I went to visit my dad in the hospital after his surgery and he begged me to get help. He told me that he didn't want me dying before he did and he didn't want to die without knowing that I was sober and would be okay. My dad’s heart attack also made me realize that I didn’t have forever to fix things. If I wanted to have a relationship with him I needed to get sober. I went to A Forever Recovery and after completing the program there I did okay for 6 months. It wasn’t easy for me to stay sober and right at the 6 month mark I relapsed. For a few months I hid it from my dad, eventually he realized that I’d was using again and confronted me about it. We talked and I agreed that I needed to go back to rehab. He wanted me to try a different rehab and I agreed with him because I had relapsed after my AFR program. I went to a different rehab and relapsed quickly after that program and 2 more before my dad and I agreed that going to AFR had been the most helpful and that I should go back there. There was 2 years between the first time I went to AFR and the second. Even though I knew going to AFR was the best thing for me I was still nervous about going back there. I was worried that it would be weird being back there or that the staff there would be disappointed to see me again. It wasn’t like that at all. There are staff at AFR who have past with addiction and the staff who weren’t addicts have been around long enough and are experienced enough that they understand how hard it is to get and stay sober. Going back there was actually really easy. I got along with the staff and the other clients there and it was easy staying there for however long I needed to. The counselors there will push you hard when you’re working on your program. When you have free time though they do a lot to make sure you’re having fun there. They were always planning activities for us or outings for us to go on and they were always really fun. It was really nice working with people who understood me. Because of my counselor’s past I could talk to him about anything and everything. I knew that every response from him and every little bit of advice came from experience. He wasn’t just repeating something he’d read, hoping that would help. My counselor had found what worked for him and he helped me to find what would work for me. My counselor help me with my dad a lot too. My counselor talked to my dad regularly throughout my program. He kept my dad updated on what I was working on, where in my program I was and how I was doing both mentally and emotionally. He also talked to my dad a lot about addiction and explained things to him better than I ever could. He worked with my dad and I and got us started on repairing our relationship. By the time I graduated from AFR the second time I understood so much more about myself. I understood what I could handle and what I couldn’t. I knew who and what I could be around without relapsing and who and what I absolutely couldn’t be around if I wanted to stay sober. I graduated from AFR 18 months ago and I’m still sober. I love it. I love being sober. I love how much better my life is since gong to AFR. My dad and I are closer than ever. With my dad’s new and better understanding of addiction he’s become the person I go to when I need help. He’s always been there for me and supported me in getting sober. Now, when I had a bad day or something happens that makes it harder for me to stay sober, he’s the person I talk to. With all the help and support my dad’s given me I’m glad that he can see me sober, doing well and know that I’ll continue to stay this way.

My parents talked me into going to AFR 8 months ago. Actually they basically pestered and bulldozed me into going to AFR but it was the best thing I could have ever done for myself so I’m extremely grateful they didn’t stop pestering me till I gave in and went. Over the years I’ve gone to my parents for help getting into rehab many times. Since I started using I’ve been trying to get sober and it’s been a rough ride for all of us. In the beginning of my addiction I was pretty optimistic about my recovery but the more times I relapsed after rehab and the more rehabs I went to the less optimistic I became. Until I just wanted to give up. I wasn’t suicidal, not exactly. I was tired though and it wouldn’t have taken much for me to become suicidal. So when my parents found AFR and told me about it I decided I didn’t want them wasting their money and told them I wasn’t interested. The way I figured it, I had hurt my parents enough. Every time I relapsed after they helped me get into a program, I was hurting them. Every time I could get clean I was hurting them and I figured the disappointment of me not going into treatment was better than the disappointment they’d feel when the program didn’t work and I relapsed. They kept pestering though and eventually I gave in. When I did go to AFR I went more with the attitude of showing them it wouldn’t work, I didn’t actually want help. In the end though, it didn’t matter why I went there. I went to AFR 8 months ago and I loved it there. Being at AFR was a lot easier for me than I had expected. The staff working in detox were amazing and they made the detox process much easier for me to get through. Most people that work in a drug rehab do so because they want to help people. The problem I’ve always had is that while those people have good intentions, they have no experience with drugs themselves and it creates a divide. At least it always did with me. They have staff at AFR who have been addicted to drugs though so that divide isn’t there. Having someone I could talk to who’d been through it themselves and knew how hard of a time I was having, that’s what helped me get through my detox and it opened my eyes to the fact that this place might just be able to help me more than I thought. The offer the SMART program at AFR and it’s the first time I was able to do that program. They do offer other programs but I was really interested in the SMART program. Plus, I’ve done enough 12-step programs in my life to know they don’t work for me. That’s something that is really nice about AFR though. I could do the program that I wanted and since they offer different programs someone else there could do whatever program they wanted. Another thing that helped was that I was able to stay there for 2 months. I’ve been to longer programs before and relapsed right after so it wasn’t just how long I stayed there. The combination of the length of time I was there, the program I did and the staff that helped me through it made going to AFR the best experience I’ve ever had when working to get sober. It’s truly amazing how much going to AFR helped me. I got there 8 months ago, stayed for 2 months and have been home for 6 months without touching a single substance. Staying sober at rehab is obviously easy. There’s nothing there to tempt or distract you. So when you have a craving a rehab it’s not hard to push it aside and focus on your program. It’s when you get home that staying sober becomes hard and learning how to deal with those cravings without giving in to them is one of the things I learned during my program and it’s a big reason why I’ve stayed sober this time.

I’ve gone to 3 other rehabs and a detox before going to A Forever Recovery and AFR is the first and the only place I’ve been to that was able to help me with my drug addiction. I started smoking week when I was 16 and if I’d only stuck with weed, I would have been fine. I didn’t stick with weed though and continued trying other drugs until I found pain pills, which I fell in love with. For a while I was able to keep myself to using them occasionally but as time went on, I used them more and more until I was using every day, was completely dependent on them and really couldn’t function without them. When I first tried to get sober, I went to a detox. I had hoped that I had the willpower to not go back to using if I was completely sober and through detox. They gave me Suboxone while I was there, and it helped. The cravings went away, and I wasn’t in withdrawal. It was really nice to just feel normal again. As I was weaned off the Suboxone though, the cravings to use came back and became more intense. After I’d been weaned off the Suboxone for a couple days I was able to leave the detox and I was barely out of the parking lot before I’d taken something. After that, I started going to rehabs. Thinking that being off the pills for a longer amount of time would help. I hated going to rehab. Every place I went to was wrong for me. I didn’t like the programs or the people working at them and it was hard to stay through whatever program I was doing. My parents would convince me to stay and finish or I’d feel bad for putting my parents through all this. I finished each of the programs I did but, that didn’t help me at all either. After the third rehab my parents found A Forever Recovery but, when they first brought it up, I wasn’t willing to go. I know that it takes some people a while to get clean, I don’t know, maybe I was a bit conceited but, I always thought that I’d only need one rehab. So, after the third rehab didn’t help me, I became depressed and I hated the idea of trying again. I did like the sound of AFR but, didn’t want to go. Until I was scared out of my mind. I found out that a friend of mine was in a coma after overdosing and that terrified me, so I agreed to go to AFR. My parents had chosen AFR for me because of the different programs they have. Since I’d gone to a few programs without any sort of improvement my parents felt that having different programs in one place would help me. Which it did. I found a program that I liked, that felt right to me and that changed everything with my recovery. It was more than just the program I did that made AFR such a good place for me. While at AFR it wasn’t just about dealing with my addiction. As I was going through the program, I also learned a lot about who I was, what kind of life I wanted to live and I worked to get every part of life back on track. The staff helped me a lot with my parents too. I always had a hard time talking to my parents because I could never explain things the right way. I knew that they didn’t completely understand me and what I was going through because I wasn’t doing a great job in explaining things. The staff at AFR helped my parents understand what I was currently dealing with, why I was having a hard time and what they could expect throughout my program and when I got home. Since coming back home my parents have been a huge help and that’s because of the staff helping me talk to them. Because of the talks they had with the staff and because of the help I got in talking to my parents, I was able to talk to them about it and because they did understand, they helped me to stay sober. I learned so much while I was at AFR. I learned how to handle myself in any situation I might find myself in. I feel really good right now and in control of my life and I’m still sober because of everything I learned at AFR and the support system they helped me to create.

Going to A Forever Recovery was the most beneficial experience of my life. My problem with opiates started when I was 19. It started with pain pills, moved to heroin and Xanax and then I was taking everything and anything I could get my hands on. Though heroin and Xanax were my preferences. When I was 23 my parents convinced me to get help and I went to a rehab that they’d chosen. At that rehab I was put on Suboxone to help me through my detox and was weaned off it. The Suboxone helped me so much, at the time it felt like a miracle drug. Taking it allowed me to feel normal but, even better was that I wasn’t craving anything while I was on it. So, when I relapsed after finishing that rehab, I went to a doctor and asked to be prescribed Suboxone. Which I stayed on for 4 years and in those 4 years my life improved so much. By taking the Suboxone my life was almost completely normal. I could go to work; kept a steady job and I could go out with friends without worrying that my night with me taking something I shouldn’t. I was still taking something for my addiction, and I knew I couldn’t stay on it forever so after 4 years, I decided that it was time for me stop taking it. Which was really hard for me. I thought because I was coming off Suboxone and a really low dose of Suboxone and not pain pills or heroin that it would be easier for me to get through the withdrawals. It wasn’t and I ended up taking Percocet to try to ease the withdrawal symptoms. Percocet has a much shorter half-life than Suboxone and my plan was to take a small amount of Percocet until the Suboxone was out of my system and then tough out the rest of the withdrawal. Turns out, I’m not really the tough it out type. I continued taking Percocet until I was right back where I started. Addicted to pain pills. I started looking into rehabs and after finding A Forever Recovery, I asked my parents to help me get there. Going to AFR wasn’t easy but, I was determined to make my life my own again and I felt that AFR was my best chance at that. The staff at AFR helped me a lot. It was hard for me, especially in the beginning. Most drug addicts are master manipulators and I was no different. It might have been necessary for me to be in a place where I couldn’t manipulate anyone but, that didn’t make it any easier for me. I was so used to manipulating people and situations to get my way that being in a place where I couldn’t was hard for me to deal with at first and it was a painful adjusting period. The approach that AFR takes with rehabilitation made a big difference for me. The different programs they have meant that I wasn’t doing some cookie cutter approach to my treatment. The counselors helped me find the right program, the one that would help me the most and that ended up being the SMART program. Which has helped me so much. I’ve changed so much since going to AFR. I went there in November of 2018 and stayed there for just over 10 weeks. I got home in January of this year and I’ve stayed sober since getting home. It wasn’t exactly fun staying at AFR through Thanksgiving and Christmas, the staff worked hard to make sure the holidays were nice, and I spent it with good friends instead of family but, it’s not the same as spending the holidays with your family. It was worth it though. My family have always welcomed me during the holidays whether I was using or not. However, this is the first Christmas I’ll be with my family and completely sober in over 11 years. I can’t thank the staff enough for what they’ve helped me achieve. I have over 12 months sober and it’s because of the hard work that the staff at AFR made sure that I did. Going to AFR wasn’t easy, really it was the hardest thing I’ve done in my life, but it was worth it.

When I went to A Forever Recovery, I was ready to start a new life. I was ready to stop doing drugs and everything else that was harmful to myself and to others. I was this weird mix of hopeful yet, jaded. Because while I wanted all those things, I wasn’t sure that I could really do them. That mindset of wanting to get off drugs helped me a lot though. AFR is the first rehab I went to where I wanted to get off drugs and because of that I was more receptive to doing the program and working on myself. While I was at AFR I learned how to navigate my life and my choices so that I wouldn’t fall back into old habits and the things I learned while there are the reason I’ve been able to stay sober. 6 months ago, I finished my program at AFR and while I’m still sober, I also feel stable. Which for me, is just as important. I learned a lot about myself while I was at AFR. I learned why I’d been doing the things I’d been doing, why I’d been making those choices and I learned how to stop when things were getting harder in my life and how to take a step back, reevaluate things and then deal with them before I got to a point where I wanted to use. It can be hard to stay sober after rehab. For me, it was because always, in the back on my mind is a thought that every bad day I have, everything I don’t like can be swept away if I use. I knew that if I started using, I wouldn’t care about it anymore and it can be hard to really deal with something instead of using that escape. So, while I was at AFR, I learned how to deal with things before it got to the point where I wanted to escape. While I was going through my program, I decided that I didn’t want to go home to my parent’s house. With everything I learned at AFR I could have gone home and stayed sober but, I had family in Colorado, and I decided that starting over somewhere new would be easier and less stressful for me. I’ve always had a hard time asking for help, I always felt like if I asked for help, I was failing at whatever it was. So, I’d try to do everything on my own and I’d fail anyways. When I was going through my program, I realized that staying sober was something I wasn’t going to be able to do without help and that the bigger support system I had, the easier it would be for me. That asking for help wasn’t failing but, making sure I could succeed. So, while I was at AFR, I asked my aunt and uncle for their help and they’ve been amazing. My parents were behind my decision to move away from them because they knew that me starting over somewhere fresh was going to be easier for me than trying to do it with them. My uncle helped me get a job and I started working there 5 days after I got to Colorado. I’ve been doing good there too. I go to work every day and I’m never late. 6 months of going to work on time, every day is the best record I’ve ever had with something like that. I’m also paying all my own bills and doing everything else I should be doing as an adult. As I said before, my life is stable now. Before going to AFR, I wouldn’t have thought my life right now would be possible. Even though I wanted to get sober, I really didn’t think it was something that I could do. I was sure that I was a drug addict, that I’d always be a drug addict and that I would never beat my addiction. I wanted that fresh start and a new life but, didn’t really think it was possible for me. Being around the people at AFR helped me to see that even though my life had been completely derailed by my addiction, I could get it back on track. The counselors really helped me while I was there too. Sometimes, it was them being there to talk to me, or helping work through some issue I was having. Sometimes, it was calling me on my bull and not letting me get away with something. They didn’t let anything, whether it was me or something else, hinder my recovery and I’m really grateful for that.

I don’t know where my daughter would be, or what my daughter would be doing right now if she hadn’t gone to A Forever Recovery. When my husband first called AFR and spoke to an intake counselor our daughter wasn’t willing to get help and at the time we were sure if she’d ever agree to get help. Our daughter was addicted to drugs though so we couldn’t do nothing. The intake counselor was amazing though. He was willing to talk to my husband or I whenever we called, and he was instrumental in helping us get our daughter’s agreement to get treatment for her addiction. He helped us understand why our daughter wasn’t even willing to talk to us about her addiction, why she refused to get help and he coached us on how to speak with our daughter better. Because of his coaching we were able to finally talk to our daughter about going to rehab without making her defensive and were able to keep the conversation on the right track. Even knowing it might be a very long time before our daughter would agree to et help, he still took the time to speak with us at least once a week, asking after us, asking after our daughter, giving us good advice and helping us cope with having a daughter addicted to drugs. He also helped us so that everything was set up so that as soon as we did have her agreement, she would be on a plane, headed to AFR before she had a minute to change her mind or back out. Sending our daughter to AFR was and is the best decision that we’ve made when it comes to the kind of place for her to get the treatment that she needed. When she got to AFR, it didn’t take long for the changes in her to become visible. For starters, I hadn’t had a single conversation with her in over 5 years that didn’t end with her asking for money or with us getting into a fight when I wouldn’t give her any. When she finished her detox and called home, I was able to talk to her without her asking for money or us having any disagreements at all. Which was a really nice change. My husband and I went to visit her after she’d been at AFR for 3 weeks and the physical changes were just amazing. She’d lost a lot of weight due to her drug use and she’d started gaining it back. Her skin was also clearing up and she was looking so happy that it physically changed her appearance. As a parent, you worry about your kids and having one of your kids start to use drugs is horrible. Watching your kid become completely dependent on a drug like heroin, when there is nothing that they will let you do to help them, it’s a really horrible thing for a parent to have to deal with. You are sitting on the sidelines, knowing that they are choosing to hurt themselves, knowing that until they make the decision to get help, there’s not much you can do. Having that kid finally get the help they need and watching them come back and start acting like the person you love in amazing. Because my daughter went to A Forever Recovery, because of the help my husband and I received before our daughter had even agreed to go there, she’s now off everything, completely sober and has been for 5 months. Since my daughter has come home, she’s been vigilant in continuing with her aftercare. She speaks with the aftercare counselor pretty regularly, though it tapers off the longer she’s home. She understands that just because she went to treatment, it doesn’t mean that her dad and I instantly started trusting her again and she is working hard to earn our trust back. She started a new job 2 months ago and because she knew her dad and I were worried that having her own money again would lead to her using again, she worked it out with her dad so that he’s in charge of her money for now. It wasn’t completely necessary as it’s her job and it’s her money but, she’s shown us a lot of consideration by doing this and it goes to show just how far she’s come since going to AFR.

The first time I saw something about A Forever recovery must’ve been at least 7 years ago. I was looking into rehabs for my son and AFR had seemed like a good place for him. Before calling them, I did a bit of research and after reading some of the reviews and posts, I changed my mind. I read far too many reviews or posts that said that AFR was basically a recruitment center for a cult, and I had no interest in sending my son to a place like that. My son spent the next 6 years in and out of rehab and every time he relapsed and I’d start looking for a rehab for him, I’d come across the advertisements for A Forever Recovery and after 6 years of my son making zero improvement, I decided that it might just be easier to get him out of a cult once he was clean, if that cult could get him clean. Obviously, I was at the end of my rope because that’s not a normal thought for a mother to have. I ended up calling A Forever Recovery and found out that AFR isn’t affiliated with that cult anymore. Which definitely made it a much easier decision to send him there. AFR has an impressive set-up and the more I heard about it, the more excited I was to be sending my son there. AFR has different programs that their clients choose from. They don’t have a one size fits all mentality when it comes to treatment and I thought that, more than anything else would help my son. Honestly, I’m a bit embarrassed to admit that it never once occurred to me that my son wasn’t the only problem, that maybe the programs he was doing weren’t right for him. Whenever I found out that he’d relapsed, I blamed it on him, thinking he wasn’t trying hard enough or didn’t care enough to try. I’d been sending him to 12-step programs because it was the only program that I knew anything about. It’s been around for so long that I didn’t even consider looking into different programs. So, before my son went to AFR the only kind of program he’d done was the 12-step program. My son was able to choose a program that he felt comfortable doing and his entire attitude towards his recovery changed after he decided to do the SMART program. He put much more effort into doing that program because he’d finally found something that made sense to him. The clients at AFR are also moved forward on their programs based on individual progress. As I’ve said, they don’t have a one size fits all mentality at AFR, so the clients choose their program but, they also stay at AFR for however long it takes them to get it right. When my son first started at AFR, he did so like he’d started every rehab program before, Which was a bit annoyed that he had to go back to rehab to appease me, planning to just ride out the program without putting much effort into. After going through detox, seeing the different program that they have and spending time figuring out what he wanted to do, his whole attitude changed about being there. It stopped being something he had to do and became something that he wanted to do. He stayed at AFR for 18 weeks because he wanted to stay for that long. He knew that being at AFR was helping him and he felt that the program he was doing was something that would really help him stay sober, so he put everything into doing the program right. Going to A Forever Recovery gave my son a better chance at staying sober than every other rehab he’s ever gone to. I am very happy that I finally called AFR and gave them a chance because going there has saved my son’s life. He got home last week, and I’ve never seen him so determined to stay sober. He’s doing everything he’s supposed to be doing, working on his aftercare program and staying in touch with one of his counselors from AFR. Our entire family’s life has improved because of my son’s stay at AFR and I’m so grateful for everything they did for him and everything they’ve continued to do since he’s been home.
