90 days of inpatient with counselor big Frank and 90 days of sober living saved my life and put me back on track (if I had really ever been on track before addiction is questionable!). Palmetto is not the Ritz-Carlton with room service as some seem to expect, but it was an extraordinary and clean/nice facility that I thrived in. The previous GM Darren Davis is no longer with Palmetto as I understand it, and so I question how that has affected the subjective experience. Darren was a crucial puzzle piece for me, but speculating any further isnt really helpful. Anyhow. June 2014 to present day nearly Dec 2018 I'm happy healthy sober. Thank you palmetto and the wonderful people I met.

Palmetto should not assume that everyone sent to them by LSBN (Louisiana State Board of Nursing) is an addict. I now realize that the nursing profession was not for me. It was so bad, that on the first day of the new semester I had an anxiety attack and ended up in the hospital. Based on the medical records from this hospitalization, LSBN determined that I needed to complete the three day evaluation at Palmetto. Their psychiatric evaluation made no sense. They have you fill out the following tests: SIPP-118 personality questionnaire, GAPD Question Booklet, Personality Inventory for DSM-5, Personality Assessment Inventory, DAPP-SF PERSONALITY QUESTIONNAIRE, and the ZUCKERMAN-KUHLMAN ALUJA PERSONALITY QUESTIONNAIRE. This information is accurate because I wrote down the titles of the stack of paperwork they handed me at admission because it seemed so absurd. Palmetto did not follow correct protocol for hair drug testing. I failed a hair test for benzodiazepines that I had been given while in the hospital 7 months previously. The correct way to sample hair for drug testing is to take 1 & 1/2 inches from the crown of your head. Palmetto takes it from your hairline at the back of your neck. I endured a lot a Palmetto. Dr. Weiss asked my level of education, and I answered truthfully (I have a PhD in biology). He asked me what my PhD was in and I hesitated (biology is a broad subject -and I thought for a few moments whether to say something more specific about the topic of my dissertation or just "biology"). He then said that it's kind of unusual to have a PhD and not know what it is in (he never believed that I had a PhD the whole time I was there). Later, when I took medicine at the nurse's station, the nurses mockingly called me "doc." The evaluation letter that Palmetto sent to LSBN declared me unfit to continue nursing. According to Palmetto, I'm both drug addicted (cannabis) and a psychiatric invalid with "schizotypical" (Palmetto's spelling; it's actually schizotypal) personality disorder among other things. They did not show me this letter before I left; I learned its contents via mail several days later. Last fall (November 2016) I went to a talk by Dr. Weiss (attendance was compulsory). He described how the reality show Intervention started to do an episode at Palmetto, but then got mad and left. Based on my experience, the reason was obvious: unlike the medical professionals in Louisiana, Intervention has a choice about where to go for addiction treatment. I have been (and still am) afraid to post these comments about Palmetto on the internet because like over 50% of adults in the United States, I have used marijuana in the past (small amounts). Maybe weed is why LSBN sent me to Palmetto; maybe not. It doesn't matter. I know I'm not addicted to anything, no matter what Palmetto said. AND NO, I AM NOT IN DENIAL!!!!!!!! I have vices: hair pulling and obesity. Weed is not one of my vices. I realize my situation was not the typical addict that needs treatment for drugs. If that is your situation, Palmetto might be a really nice place. It's pretty (nice natural rural setting); I enjoyed the feral cats; and some of the stuff they did with addicts was an interesting life experience.

Beware. Do not come to this facility. They do not care about the patients only the 30,000.00$ per month per patient. The facility is unclean. We lived in cabins with bed bugs and rats and dirty water. They cared more for the dogs than the patients.

I went to Palmetto for an evaluation in 2013. I definitely needed it. I did my best to avoid responsibility and try to get out of doing 90 days. There was no slipping through. I had a good and dedicated therapist during my 3 days named Jeff. My problem was during the exit. The lady who gave me the results, I felt, was abusive. I make up that she felt the need to hammer denial out of my brain. She was breaking it to me that basically, my world was coming to an end. It is a vulnerable time and it could have been handled with greater empathy. I was angry about it for a long time. In any event I went somewhere else for treatment, mostly because of that conversation. I will make 4 years sober in May and my life is on track again. My career is going well but I have to pay careful attention. I do not mean for this to be vindictive but I do need to get it off of my chest. I have friends that did treatment at this facility and are doing great. Likewise they have no complaints. This is coming only from my experience.

Initially I had a wonderful experience at Palmetto. Sean, Julie and Phillip were particularly supportive of me but my interactions with all of the counselors were positive. Sometimes positive and supportive required tough love and negative consequences but that's what I needed. My second visit was a negative one, that's when I met Leila. She was unnecessarily accusatory, unaccountably hostile and actually called me a liar on my way out the door. Ultimately I agreed with the recommendation resulting from this visit, with one exception. Leila's detective work seemed to yield the fact that I produced a forged letter in an attempt to (presumably) hide the fact that I took Sudafed. She was wrong. I was guilty of the erroneous assumption that my Sudefed positive was a missed test. I cannot imagine how her blatant contempt for me could be in any way therapeutic or helpful. My eleven months of sobriety went out the window the very day I left. I can't blame anyone but myself. If I had done everything I was supposed to then I could've handled the stress. Now that I am back on the wagon and doing EVERYTHING within my power to follow Palmetto's recommendations, I'm filled with nothing but hope for a far better future than I would have had without them. I will never forget Sean's gentle kindness or scathing sarcasm accordingly. Julie's empathetic wisdom, Phillip's calm acceptance and encouragement. The funny thing is that I flunked out of treatment and may never work as a nurse again (through my own actions) but I am on a profoundly spiritual journey of recovery and self discovery, self actualization a goal rather than merely a concept. I credit Palmetto with preparing and starting me down this path. The bedrock upon which Palmetto stands is a wonderful team of kind, loving, competent and fair staff. All exceptional people who will connect with and help you in their own special way. I sat in Mary Anne's office for two hours while she advocated on my behalf with the insurance company, knowing I had the money to pay for treatment. Sharee would gently coax a smile out of me just when I needed it. Kim's beautiful smile and kind disposition told me she cared about me. Becky's enthusiasm and cheerful singing made the med line fun. Tanya was informative, helpful and encouraging. I couldn't see it at the time but everything we did had a valuable purpose.

I do think that everyone there means well. Sean is great. He's probably the only sane person working there. The reviews are true. If you have insurance, you automatically get 90 days. When the money runs out, you have 24 hrs to get the f...k out. The goal is to break you down then rebuild you. What happens to people that they break down but don't complete the process because their insurance runs out? Not good. This is a company like any other. The goal is to make money. I'm sure that some people benefit. For myself, I have nightmares. It's a cult type experience.

I attended in 2005 and as of 2015 I have not relapsed. The program they have in place works if you are willing to really change. It seems the other negative reviews were left by people who don't understand the concepts they have in place. I have been to many facilities before this one and it can change your life if you are willing to let it.

Easy treatment? Not at all! It takes alot of work to recover. Don't expect Mother Teresa stroking your head. Painful? At times, yes- but emotional growth invariably follows. Is it for everyone? If you aren't motivated enough to be brutally honest with yourself and your addiction, and aren't willing to go to any length to get better, then this place is not for you. Does everyone make it? No- some relapse; others leave because they think they can do it on their own; some end up leaving, then dying in one form or another (usually from an overdose). I consider myself lucky. This place saved my life and my career- but it's only the beginning of a long journey to recovery. I am grateful for having gone there for treatment- but I don't ever want to repeat this process again. Despite what one may think is expensive, the cost is still less than a luxury rehab. It was worth every penny and it wasn't entirely covered by my insurance. The investment made is rewarded with a lifetime of being clean and sober. I completed a 90 day program. If one thinks they only recommend 90 days to everyone, I beg to differ. If anything, the chances of a successful recovery increases when you are in a longer program, especially if you are a "professional"- besides that, it's takes a lot longer time for professionals to "get their head out of their @ss "! Honestly, if you don't think you need a 90 day program, then why on earth are you still reading my review? It's no Club Med- nor is it supposed to be one. However, if one has a sincere desire to get clean and sober for the long term, this place works- if you are willing to put in the effort with your heart and soul.

If you are thinking about going here for treatment of an evaluation stay away. They tell everyone that they have a problem and need you to stay for 90 days. You are housed in cabins and you have to make your own food with other people on a budget, The group are not lead by councilors and they state the have a 90% recovery rate. This place is run by people that are Narcissistic and leave the treatment to other addicts that are there for the same reason as you are. If you are a health professional this is not the place you want to go. They will have you by your license and say you have a problem when you dont and hold you hostage by your license and your state board. They know they own you and you can not do anything about it.

UPDATE TO ORIGINAL REVIEW: after submitting my rating and review of Palmetto, Jay Piland, a "physician" on staff at Palmetto gave a five star rating to his own facility without comment. Someone saw this obvious conflict of interest and called him out on it (See "Google User Too" rating and comment below for some interesting info on Mr. Piland). Reminds me of an old saying: "Physician, heal THYSELF". What a charade!!! If you are a professional and go here to be evaluated, please be aware that --- regardless of whether you are or are not addicted to any substance --- you WILL receive a diagnosis of chemical dependency. If you are chemically dependent, a diagnosis can only help you. But if you are NOT chemically dependent, a diagnosis can adversely impact your life for years to come. After the termination of my 30 year marriage, I sunk into depression and got two DUIs in the ensuing two years. After voluntarily reporting to the State Board I came to Palmetto for a 3 day evaluation to prove to the Board that I did not have an addiction to alcohol. I needed counseling for sure, but for grief and depression after my divorce. From the moment I arrived, I was talked to and treated with the assumption that I was an "addict" and to say otherwise means you're "in denial", so you can't win even if you know you're being truthful. In the three days to be "evaluated", no more than two hours of interviews were conducted. The addictionologist was clearly determined to make me "fit" into the DSM criteria for alcoholism and before I knew it I was "diagnosed" and told I needed to stay for their 90 day program. My attorney later told me he's never had a single case where someone went for a 3 day evaluation who wasn't "diagnosed". Then you are totally without any hope of avoiding going through a 90 day program because you will be over a barrel. If you don't go, you'll lose your license. If you do go, you'll pay $30,000 PLUS for the program. You are now irrevocably held hostage for money by a broken system. Bottom line, because it's profitable to them financially, they tell everyone that they have a problem and that you need you to stay for 90 days. If you are a health professional who is not suffering from addiction, this is NOT the place you want to go. If you do have an addiction, maybe you'll get help from their 12-step program, but that's up to you. As for Palmetto, it's money that's, first and foremost, their priority.

my gf and her mom hand crafted the great escape to the great place of palmetto recovery in Rayville, la. little did I kno, it would cost my relationship with whom I loved. it would also cost a tiny fortune @ 2,225$ a week .i sometimes don't get things that are right in front of me and this was no exception. i will cut this short because I am so sick inside about the center itself I could vomit. its voluntary and cash is the only option. so she enters to get help for substance and without detox,shes medicated and placed in her new home. the program is swift and within days I talked to my gf and she sounded like a child,full of hope,joy and happiness. give the patient a replacement drug of choice, then bombard them with the most unrealistic theories of Gestalt ,that is their belief, that Ihave ever heard. don't take a loved one here unless you want a programmed invalid, that will need 24/7 care to cope with the real world, way, way outside of their teachings. the MD their ,Dr.Doug Cook, has had his med license yanked a few times, twice for, what I call laying pipe,they call sexual contact with a patient and once for substance abuse. I would not send my child to be under that kind of care unless I just didn't have knowledge of it because who would imagine an uptown doc sitting in a locked room with a medicated beautiful little girl that's under his f.....g trance, would get him a little bit you know. of course hes prolly going to church now and went thru some council and is still practicing today @ palmetto. I gotta go, I don't have another second to waste trying to understand why someone with this knowledge would continue to allow her stay. I don't have another second to understand why someone as myself, who loves this girl deeply is not to have contact with her, but has contact with persons that have engaged with sex, drugs, holistic rock n roll. the name explains their game. palmetto is a tree like plant believed to have be used in everything from medicine to sex enhancement to getting out grass stains in clothes.(none of which have ANY scientific evidence proof,just myth. so there you have it. last but not least, to get her away from her problems, which she had way before me, she will most likely be shipped to Austin,tx or out to Colorado. lol angie, my heart will always tug for yours. Palmetto ARC started my foundation in AA, however, I do not believe they are a good center for individuals with mental illness or young adults. I was asked to leave the facility after 25 days because of mental illness, however after leaving I had a relapse and have now been clean and sober since 4/16/04 so I owe some measure of gratitude to Palmetto.
