Had been having severe suicidal thoughts for over a year before coming here. It’s shocking when you first enter, but the staff make you feel surprisingly better. Staff such as Antonio, Robbie, Jen, Kip, Valerie, Amber and Sir Jarrett made it feel much more comfortable. They really do somehow make you want to feel better and almost nothing else has ever done the same for me. The various types of therapy are amazing as well. Sir Jarrett did an amazing job of making you feel normal. Amber did the same and is also really good at calming others down. Valerie and Kip would always pull you aside and ask how everything was doing, especially Kip. I know this sounds very rant-like but this place truly saved my life.

Amazing staff, especially Kip (one of the adolescent nurses). They are understanding but at the same time they push you to get better. They somehow make you wish to get better even when you arrive it's the last thing you want to do. They don't know much about eating disorders as that isn't what they are specialized in, but pretty much anything else they can help with. I don't know anything about the other units (acute, adult) but from my experience they are brilliant. <3

Don't send your loved one to Epworth unless you never want to see them again! MAXIMUM SECURITY LOCKDOWN FACILITY (think of the mental hospital in Terminator 2). Beware! St. Joesph County Sheriff routinely hauls people there against their will in Handcuffs!! Pissed off friends & family turned away at the front bulletproof glass reception window inside. Say they will "pass along" your name & number to inmate to call you back (none are there willingly). Won't even verify if person is THERE !!! Guantanamo on U.S. soil. Staff’s job appears to be to continually LIE (to patients & visitors). They don’t like visitors. They especially don’t like anyone who tries asserting their legal rights. Ban them from visiting. Continually lie & be told “They’re in group.” when you try calling loved one. No contact. “Doctor’s orders.” Ask patient, “Who you gonna call?” Only 2 patient Phones supposedly Out-of-order frequently. Show up for visit (lousy 1 hr. 15 min. Tu/Th/Sat) to be stalled, and shut down. “No visitors – doctor’s orders.” MEMORIAL HOSPITAL SECURITY + MEMORIAL HOSPITAL POLICE SUVs continually parked out front. Hand-delivered Greeting cards will be confiscated as soon as you leave (taken away from patient). Mustn’t have patient keeping track of how long they’ve been held AGAINST THEIR WILL. Banquet TV dinners (can you believe that?) NO BOOKS (fascists). They only have ( 1 ) M.D. + ( 1 ) Nurse Practitioner who play God with "patients" refusing to release them for as long as they can get away with billing Medicare (526 staffed beds). “No change. No reason to contact family.” There is no such thing as a treatment Plan (there is no treatment whatsoever) – playing cards, watching TV, can do that at home. NO SMOKING (can you say ill-tempered Withdrawal?) Lost 100% of her clothes in the laundry. Confiscated her sandals (and wouldn’t allow slippers) because “Could be used as a weapon.” Nonsense. Other inmates were wearing footwear. She was forced to walk around in socks. Doctor, Nurse Practitioner, and Social Worker all asked, “What are you doing here?” only to decide to Keep her for as long as possible. Orderly told me the majority of people there are from severely lacking sleep! Dope them up on meds & put in "Quiet Room" (100% metal walls & floor). Biker dude broke his hand punching the wall in quiet room. This is not an opinion. These are facts. This all was my unfortunate experience. My loved one now has High Blood Pressure (caused she’s positive) being dragged out of her own bedroom by 2 Cops & held for 9 Days of “Hell. Pure HELL” (her own words). She said all she did was cry for the entire time. Still cries talking about it. Doesn’t feel safe in her own home any more.Take your loved one across the street to Oaklawn (they don’t admit anyone without their Consent).

Great caring and positive people, workers at this company. Been here several times, better results each time. Doctors are very nice and understanding as well as the social workers and other employees. It's a safe place to get checked out/"figure out what's going on"; they even find/ have ways to help fix the negative lifestyles/negative emos etc so we can live more comfortably/, they also refer to certain medication and physicians if needed. Good place..we need more places like that...

They hold people as long as their insurance pays and not a moment longer or earlier.

Most horrible place for the elderly. Things I saw there were unbeliveable. Wouldn't let my worst enemy stay there. The so called sitters mistreat the patients terribly and seem to lack training or intelligence to do the job. Suspect sexual abuse to family member! STAY FAR AWAY.

food expired, staff threatened a kid with anorexiaq that if she doesn't eat she won't get anymore meals. What??? I did learn some coping skills, however, they were useless for me. The staff didn't understand anything about me.

Do not send your child here if they have an eating disorder. The staff is rude and knows nothing about eating disorders. They will not monitor your child like they say they will. The techs are clearly told nothing about the pts they are supposed to be monitoring. Seek Residential help from a facility that specializes in eating disorders.

My boyfriend has gone there 3 times and says they do nothing to help. Their services are outdated and they don't help because they care, they help because it makes them money. And that help is mediocre at best. If you're mentally ill and in need of help, I do not recommend this hospital.

I was a patient there about a year ago. I had the unfortunate encounter with a night nurse named Rebecca. When I wanted to talk to a manager regarding her mistreatment and misunderstanding my feelings of my spouse passing away. I was introduced to a nurse named Liz Saliant. She was rude, obnoxious and belligerent. Epworth just made my depression feel worse. I could not wait to get our of there.

My 14-year old son stole more than $20, used it to go out and buy three knives today. When he finally came home 3 hours later, we found and confiscated the knives. He then picked open his skin with his finger nails and began writing in blood on himself that he wanted to kill himself. We took him to Epworth and were literally told that he was just doing it for attention and if he hadn't "verbally" said he wanted to kill himself they would not admit him. He has attempted suicide in the past and is diagnosed with bipolar. A month ago, he went in Epworth because he was trying to hurt the rest of the family. They kept him a week- sedating him the entire time- and he came home just as manic as he went in. We are going to look at other mental health options in our area because Epworth has proven that it just wants money and does not truly care about mental health.

The most disgusting place I have ever encountered! Never send your elderly parent there if you ever want to see them again! the "aids" push them around in chairs like rag dolls! I saw nothing but MISERABLE patients. No compassion for the elderly! !Most horrible place for the elderly. Things I saw there were unbelievable. Wouldn't let my worst enemy stay there. Patients mistreated and shoved around! The place needs to be shut down! STAY FAR AWAY.

Never agree to go here it's a trap that violates your rights and the rights of loved ones. They kidnap you and hold you against your will. I never new such places existed. Here we are in America where a supposed to be medical facility can detain you without cause but only from opinions. This place is ran like a prison. My uncle has committed no crime only had a reaction to medication doctors prescribed. Now they refuse to let him go even though he feels better. I am scared for his wellbeing and feel horrible for telling him that it was ok to go here. I should of looked at reviews because this place is horrible. They strip you of everything won't let you call out one hour visits and keep you so sedated it's hard to stay awake. I'm so confused all we wanted was to make sure he was alright. This place acts like they have more rights then our own government. The police don't even have this right without a crime being committed citizens beware this place should be shut down for violations of constitutional rights no one should be able to do this without justifiable reasons back by laws not opinions. The only reason they got one star is because there's not an option for 0

I have had two loved ones visit this facility, years apart, and have both had terrible experiences. My friend was admitted a few years ago and was told that until she accepted that she was a drug addict, they couldn’t help her mentally—they never acknowledged her drug use could have been caused by her depression. She felt like not only was that inaccurate, but purely offensive, as there was no one substance she was drawn to. They refused to treat any signs of mental illness. Of course, that’s not the worst of it. A friend of mine was just admitted. He took himself there because he was feeling suicidal, but now they won’t let him leave. He isn’t able to see a doctor more than once a day or on weekends, and the doctor is never available to speak to the patients family. Actually, there is NO licensed person to answer family concerns. If you call and ask for a nurse, doctor, or social worker, you will stay on hold until you are inevitably returned to the front desk, where some unlicensed technician attempts to answer your questions. They are so understaffed that patients are not allowed to shower daily, which is not only horrible for ones mental health, but truly shows how inadequate their staff is. The technicians refuse to give patients their clothes even after they’ve been checked and the doctor has approved that they can wear them. Not to mention, all the technicians are mean to the patients but act nice to their family, and act as if they are as important as a doctor or nurse, when they have absolutely zero qualifications. There is ONE doctor that acts as a psychiatrist for all three floors, and you’re lucky if there’s a nurse on duty. It absolutely blows my mind that this place still exists, because all their patients are treated like criminals rather than mentally ill people. I will refuse to let any of my loved ones be admitted to this facility. Not only am I certain that there are better resources out there, but I’m confident there are better resources right here in South Bend.

I had an incredible experience here. My first night I was extremely overwhelmed and going through some traumatic stuff. The staff was super attentive and it truly felt like I was surrounded by family. I received around the clock care from meds to comfort there was nothing lacking. I was able to take that time and heal so that I was better prepared for the world outside of the hospital. I received tons of resources to help me cope better in the future and I am positive I wont need to return in the future. If that is not true I will gladly admit myself in the future. I know ill receive the care, concern and resources I need. I feel stronger mentally, physically and emotionally. I first time doing an inpatient stay at another facility made me hate the idea of inpatient. I felt more like a prisoner than a person. Here I was made to feel like a patient. I highly recommend this facility to anyone who feels life is too heavy and are not sure the have the resources or support to handle it in a healthy way. I cant say enough positive things about this place. They saved my life and more importantly they taught me to value it. They made sure I was safe and my privacy was respected at all times. I was some what sad to leave knowing I may never see these incredible people again. If I had one negative critique I didn't care for the food but I also didn't want to live so that was the last of my worries. It was decent just not what I was use to eating. We had groups that really helped us engage in our mental health recovery and get to know some others who were there as well. It really made you feel human and less alone. It made it feel ok to need help and to know your not the only one out here struggling. Much love, peace and blessings to the staff. YOU SAVE LIVES!!!

My daughter was admitted to Epworth center for talking about suicide. This place is a joke. My daughter told me they was gonna let her out the next day. I heard nothing from them then I get a phone call from a Dr. there. I told him he needed to see some very disturbing pictures my daughter drew. He gave me his phone number so I sent him the pictures and hour later I get a phone call from a nurse and she said we are releasing your daughter what time can you be here. I said did the Dr. get those pictures I sent? She said yes he showed them to her and she said they was old. I said she is lying and manipulating you people. She said them are some pretty harsh words about your daughter sir. I said you don't live with that child. She said well we are releasing her what time can you be here. I had told that Dr. that the 1st pictures was recent and the 2nd set was old ones. The reason I know the 1st ones I sent was recent is because the sketch pad had just recently been given to her. So this place had my daughter for 5 days and think they knew her. What kind of crisis center believes what their patients tell them as if their patients won't lie to them. Yeah right. Just a waste of money and time if you ask me because my daughter has shown no change at all
