My father- as most humans tend to be - is a complicated man. Having grown up in unique circumstances, particularly in an era where people were encouraged to keep their problems to themselves and not be a burden nor a bother to those around you, had lived 60+ years of his life in a way that might best be described as "insular." No matter what hassle or issue he was dealing with, he took things in stride and just dealt with life the best way he knew how. Him being a product of a society that represents alcohol as not only an acceptable median for dealing with problems- akin to medication, but also as a part of a hip lifestyle made drinking from a relatively young age (mid-to-late teen years) acceptable and even expected. While for many people on earth, this small aspect of life is just another thing in a long list of stuff one does, for my father- and many like him- this thing became the center of his life. So much so that he almost killed himself. And not by some conscious effort to end his life, but because he fell so deep into an addiction that had ripped his life far out of his own control, that he was no longer capable of coping and functioning like a person his age and with his ability should be able to cope and function. After a series of events best described as "unfortunate" - my father luckily found himself alive and in the hands of hospital staff, and surrounded by family who despite deep love for him, were nonetheless close to giving up on him. Through a lot of good fortune and just as much hard work, we all were able to see him through a detox period and an initial transformation into a being that for the first time in a long time could start to rationalize properly. The actual steps taken to grasp the concept that something was wrong - biologically, emotionally - and to understand that there was a new purpose in life. One about health and happiness and balance. Which lead him to New Day and so much progress and focus to his life, that I can say without doubts that he has openly decided to rely on something and on others for help with a problem and to give in to this disease that causes pain to so many, but to give in to it with an understanding and a plan to remain as much in control over his actions as he possibly can. New Day also offered a chance for his loved ones to come in and learn more about the disease of addiction, how it not only encompasses the lives of the afflicted, but those who live with the addicts. It gave greater understanding to my sisters, and further verified what I already knew (and honestly taught me a thing or two). It was an open environment for family to come in just about any day of the week for free meetings with councilors, and while my father's program (intensive outpatient, aka- IOP) was highly structured, the family meetings were open to all to come and go as you please, whenever you want. New Day also offered my father the chance to be open about his experiences, feelings, and further help him work on his fears and stumbling blocks. Something I never thought I'd see from my father has started to blossom - the understanding and direct action to be open and honest about himself and his problems, wants and fears. Not just openly speaking about problems, but addressing them and acting on them. He's living life proudly, understanding and taking ownership of his condition and allowing his struggle to now be the center of his life - but obviously seeing it and dealing with it differently. If his hero status by me was slipping, he has regained it, and even broadened it. This honesty and commitment is inspiring, and a big part of that was brought on by the great people and programs offered through New Day Center. For anyone out there struggling with addiction - whether it is your own, or are living with someone who has a problem - I highly recommend New Day Center as a resource for information and guidance.
