I’ve waited numerous years to write this review, as I wanted to make certain it was not emotion based. Want to share with you one of the most horrific events in my life. I cannot more strongly encourage you not to become a patient or allow anyone you care about to become a patient at HopeQuest. Below are just a few of the negative things I experienced during my stay at HopeQuest which has to be one of the most horrific treatment centers if not the most horrific treatment center in America. 1. Roy Blankenship - The guy who started HopeQuest created the material to help people not be a homosexual anymore. Interestingly, enough, Roy left HopeQuest to marry a man. 2. Troy Haas isthe current CEO at HopeQuest. Troy would give off a very creepy vibe. In one breath, he would talk about his 18-year-old daughter and her being accepted into Texas A&M and then in the very next sentence he would go into explicit detail about him receiving oral sex from prostitutes. He would share about the great financial deal he would receive from them due to them being Africans as he was a missionary in Africa, He shared how he could get multiple prostitutes because how inexpensive it was due to him being in Africa It was like he was mentally revisiting the situation, and was proud of what he had done. 3. Phil Mitchell - this was my counselor while I was there. I had a very difficult time relating to him, or putting much value in what he would say. In his past, he practiced the homosexual lifestyle, but he was “healed” by Roy’s material. Phil has very strong, feminine qualities from the way he talks to his mannerisms. Not only was it difficult for me to relate to a man like this, but he would also brag about how he abandoned his daughters in Florida, and moved to Georgia to work at HopeQuest. After leaving HopeQuest it was shared with me that Phil was not even a fully accredited counselor while he was treating patients. 4. HopeQuest and their use of public humiliation tactics. They would have all of their patients stand up in front of a room of about 100 strangers and share with the strangers the most horrific decisions they had ever made. I’m not exactly sure what they were trying to do, but I can assure you it was not effective. One of the most interesting and perplexing things that happen while I was there was during my public humiliation session. I vividly remember standing there, crying sharing with strangers, the most horrific parts of my life, and seeing Phil in the back of the room, smiling from ear to ear, like he was experiencing pleasure from my pain and humiliation. 5. The psychological damage to the children of HopeQuest patients. While a patient, you are not allowed to have any contact with your family for months and this includes your young children. While there, I witness numerous patients clearly articulate the reasoning behind their young children, needing to have contact with their dad and the potential psychological damage it could cause to the children. Not only were these request not granted, but it seem to fall on deaf ears. There was an arrogance and lack of compassion with the staff there that was nauseating. . 6. HopeQuest believes they can “heal” you from being a homosexual. I’m not very familiar with this subject, but I do know that there were many return patients who had gone through their treatment to not be a homosexual anymore who continued the homosexual lifestyle after they left HopeQuest. 7. We had numerous patients breaking into the medicine cabinet and abusing prescription drugs which created some scary behavior and unsafe environments. 8. I noticed a I noticed an interesting trend while being at HopeQuest. When they would become at capacity regarding patients, there seem to always be a couple patients that would get kicked out at that time. Would I came to find out later is that when a patient would get kicked out , HopeQuest would keep their money and not refund. They actually stole $10,000 from me. I noticed a couple interesting trends while I was there. They would talk about how financially strapped they were but they would let some people attend for absolutely free, while making other people pay full rate. 9. I know of numerous churches in the Atlanta area who will not support nor recommend HopeQuest to any of their church members. One of those churches being Andy Stanley’s church North Point Community Church. Andy’s church helped fund two spouses of church employees and their experience was so horrendous that Andy’s church stopped supporting and recommending HopeQuest. 10. Professional opinions - as you can imagine I needed more counseling after I left HopeQuest didn’t when I first attended I heard from numerous counselors in the Atlanta area about the horrific reputation of HopeQuest in the Atlanta counseling community. One psychologist referred to HopeQuest as a total “shit show”. That’s certainly the understatement of the year! 11. They have a barn with animals and there were a couple patients who would sneak out in the evening and have sex with some of the animals in the barn. 12. Some patients would sneak out and go get alcohol and tobacco at the Quiktrip which was within walking distance of the facility. Don’t let the beautiful grounds fool you. It’s an incredible naturistick property that seems peaceful, but there is absolutely no peace found at HopeQuest.
