I will never forget being a patient at this place when I was 10 years old. I didn't have any real issues other than the supposed "claim" that I needed a cat scan due to issues with migraines. My parents thought the place would be just another temporary thing for me and would be no different than a summer camp. They dropped me off there and from that point on it became progressively worse by the day with each day just a little worse. I learned of all kinds of horrors there. I saw kids who were essentially abandoned there for life. One kid was barely 5 years old when he was abandoned there and when I met him he was 12 years old. They tried to get us to talk about our feelings but then no one never actually listened. They basically set us up in a sort of color system with each band determining your "status". The better the status the more things you could do. Alas being the lowest end of the totem was miserable. My parents on my birthday were able to get me out for 1 evening and as my time came to a close I begged them to end this but they promised it would be done in another week. I spent two more before finally getting freed. My parents claimed that they tried to get me out but Sandy Pines did everything possible to stall things. To this day I keep one singular tote bag as a reminder of this place. Before I was there I never cried before I went to sleep but after that I still do it. Im almost in my 40s and I still have nightmares about this place. I often wonder what happened to some of those poor souls still left behind. If you are a parent thinking of sending your kid there to "improve" on him or her then maybe its you that needs improving. This place is not the answer. Never was and never will be. If your child is "compliant" after coming out of this places its only cause their so psychologically damaged that they fear going back to there again. That is not good parenting no matter what people say.

Please do not send your kids here!!! Staff is undereducated, and speak to the kids inappropriately. Male staff comes on to the young girls, staff is suspended for a few days then brought back to work. If they can't help your child they falsify records to say your child is stable to get them out of the facility. These people are not interested in truly helping parents and children. They need to be shut down!!!

Making the choice to put your child into a residential program is beyond difficult. My son was at Sandy Pines for the past 6 months and his care exceeded any and all expectations I had. The doctors, nurses, mental health techs, case managers and especially his therapist were all highly trained, compassionate , and adept at caring for my adolescent son. It was truly a blessing entrusting my son to them. I highly recommend this facility. My son is not ‘cured’ but he certainly has improved and I’ll be forever grateful to Sandy Pines for the help they gave him.

Between all the bad experiences I had with my son after his suicidal attempts and erratic behavior, Sandy Pines was the best thing that come out from it. My son is a genius kid. An A+ student with a brilliant future that suffered a long period of depression, panic attacks, bulling and problems at school that put me and my family to Baker Acted him about 5 times in less than one year. I was so scare to send him over there because of the bad reviews I read online and I cried a lot inside my car the first day after I left him with the therapists and doctors to take care of him. The place has discipline, care and constant monitoring of the kids. I drove 190 miles every Sunday to visit him for a couple hours but it was worth it. I cried a lot every time I left the place. I felt disappointed with myself for what happened to him. On the long road alone to home I always though about my responsibility for not being a better father before. It was hard. Really hard. He stayed there for about four months that seemed like an eternity to me. It''s been a year since he left the place but my little heart is a different person now. He is focused on his school, he learned to cope with his personal issues and that period far away from home and his things made him stronger. Get into Sandy Pines is a privilege. I feel that God blessed me and put my son in that center otherwise at this moment I could probably be crying over my son's graveyard. I am so happy. Thank you so much to all of you at Sandy Pines.

My son was in this facility for 8 months. When he first went there, I never dreamed it would be that long, but he needed that time to get the tools he needed to deal with his issues. His therapist, Ms. MK, was one of the most caring individuals ever involved in our lives. She was so instrumental in my son's personal and our family counseling sessions. The ROPES program is a wonderful tool to help families reconnect. The staff that runs that program truly care. They are respectful of the families and the patients. Sandy Pines helped me, as an only parent, to realize that my son will always struggle with mental illness, but he was given many tools to help him make a better, more peaceful life for himself. The staff on his unit were amazingly caring but firm in helping put him back on track. Thank you, Sandy Pines, for helping me find hope again.

Sandy Pines wasn't my first adolescent treatment facility but was my last stop, and on my list probably the second best that has actual helped with things. When I was admitted I didn't want help, I didn't think I needed help and 3 months in I ran away. My doctor understood how i was feeling which isn't an easy thing to find in adolescent psychiatrist. in my opinion you can get a very large variety of reactions from staff depending on the unit you are on, but overall I enjoyed the staff members I did work with. During my stay I didn't go to school because I had already graduated and they worked with me by putting me in their volunteering program. I've seen a few reviews on how staff yells and curses and the staff really only yell if you give them a reason to, and if youre cursing at staff why can't they curse at you?

Some of the staffs there need better professionalism!!! Overall there are few staffs there that are very caring, concern, helpful and loving. Its not a bad place it just some of the volunteers and staff they have that make the place seem unprofessional. I love the Receptionists there she is very professional and helpful and The best therapist there is Diane She is the real deal thats my opinion I have seen the results with my child.

Overall the staff were amazing and I sort of enjoyed my stay. There was some problems. The food was pure slop. I had found cockroaches in my food nearly 5 times during my stay. I was forced to switch from my unit to another unit even though I told the staff I didn't want to change units because I came close to the girls there. They said no they're switching me. This new unit had a girl that had part of her brain taken out due to an accident and she was not right. She was constantly shaming people, cursing them out(even staff), and she stripped twice during my stay. The staff let it happen and weren't watching her properly. Me and everyone else were tired of this girl. We all agreed that she needs to be put in another hospital for people like her. People found ways to cut themselves and apparently had poor boundary issues even though the boys and girls were separated. There were constantly fighting and this unit was so out of control that they had Ms. Judy come switch from the dolphin unit to get my unit in shape. I was always in constant fear for myself because I was afraid I was going to get jumped for something stupid,even in my sleep. The only place the girls were allowed to be was the hallway only because the boys got the tv common area. Even if we did switch places, it was barely for long because then we would have to go to dinner. Then we had levels and once you got to level 4 (which I got to) you were apparently expected to clean everything. Being the person i am I didn't know this and I was yelled at. There were other level 4's but they weren't doing their jobs either but I was the only one who got yelled at?? Also, the staff were loud at night and had woken me up some times in the middle of the night because they were always talking really loud. I confronted the night staff and even the night nurse that they were loud but it didn't do anything. Also, the night staff had no track of where the kids were. I also felt like Ms. Meghan (the blonde therapist) didn't understand me. However I did learn from my experience and I will never come back here again.

I was in sandy pines for almost two months. I went with bulimia and depression and left with psychosis. Dr. Iyer, my psychologist, had no idea what she was doing or what she was talking about. On top of that, she was extremely rude. Only one or two staff members on the unit were actually helpful. This place is absolutely worthless. You will pay big bucks for therapy and instead the therapist will give you worksheets to fill out. The staff also gave the autistic children special treatment and they could skip the line, and not fully complete their punishments like everyone else. Two kids, one being my best friend, swallowed batteries because the staff does not pay attention to the kids. The unit would also get completely out of control and kids will be stripping, fighting, and having panic attacks. Whatever you do, do not send your child to this pathetic excuse of a mental hospital.

This is not a review from a parent, this is a review from a former patient. Please, I'm begging you, listen to what I have to say. The pretty fish tank may look nice, the pool may look like something from a five-star resort, the campus may be picturesque, and the mood lighting in the receptionist office may seem calming and reassuring, but SandyPines is not the right place for your child, or any child. I stayed at SandyPines Residential Treatment Center when I was twelve years old, for a duration of nine months. I was placed on Unit C, for children twelve and under. During this time, I was put on Geodon (120mgs) and Lamictal (50mgs) twice a day, and suffered from severe cognitive degeneration as a result. Not once was I ever told why I was put on these medications, or what side effects to expect. When I regularly slept through group therapy and classes (an effect of being heavily tranquilized), I was told to "stop being lazy and cooperate with the program." I was an honor student when I got to SandyPines, and when I left, I was making straight Ds. In addition to this, I once had my entire supply of books confiscated-- books that I BROUGHT FROM HOME, or that were given to me by visiting family members during my stay-- and never saw them again. I think I remember being told that they were put in a supply closet, which then had its contents cleared out and donated to the Salvation Army. The staff of SandyPines do not know how to treat children. I was constantly screamed at, held down in uncomfortable and potentially harmful positions, and on one memorable occasion, told that my deceased mother would be ashamed of me for ending up there. At one point, my roommate at the facility confessed to me that she had been molested by a male staff member, but told me not to say anything because it would only hurt her in the end if he was investigated. I was supposed to be treated for PTSD resulting from early childhood trauma. Instead they traumatized me more. Thanks a lot, SandyPines. Thanks to supportive friends, I've somewhat recovered from what I faced there, but man, if I could see this place close its doors permanently, that would be a happy day. Not just for me, but for ex-patients everywhere, and for all children currently in the psychiatric system. I can confidently say that if you're looking for a residential treatment center for your child, stop looking. Your child needs to be listened to. Your child needs to be treated with respect and kindness. Your child does not need to be locked up and denied basic human rights, your child does not need to have their belongings stolen and never returned, and your child does NOT need to be put on antipsychotics which will end their academic career and ruin their life.

Though I was pulled from the program, and I was only there for a month. It was still the worst program I have EVER been too. Staff is not caring and curse and yell constantly, the kids in the program are always fighting, the drug classes there don't help you whatsoever, the counseling is only 2 a week for like 25 minute sessions, parents should listen to their kids when they start complaining about the program, theres no freedom, cameras in the rooms, one of the care takers is also under a legitimate case against a girl for making sexual comments to her, and the sandy pines never fired him. Foods pretty bad, and there's no freedom. Or escape either. Don't try to run away its dumb, plus they send dogs and helicopters and drones after you, not to mention all the staff and the police. The "school" isn't really like a school, what it looks like is 5 teachers in the whole facility not knowing what they're doing. this facility was one of the WORST experiences in my whole life

Do Not Send Your Child here, My Brother Was Sent There A Couple Years Ago ,They Druged Him Up With All Types Of Medication, Which Was only Making His Condition WORSER. When He Was Allowed To Do Home Visits (Which was a Couple Times Out Of 3 Years) He Was Acting Very Strange As If He Was Scared ,Or Traumatized Of Something. He Didn't Talk To Anyone. They Sent Pitures To The House Of Him Painting, In the Pool Swimming, Doing Outdoor Activities etc. But Looking At Him He's Not Fitting The Description To Do Any Of Those Thing Hes Too Doped Up Know To Do Anything Basically.

Do not listen to the negative reviewers. I have private insurance and I was able to get my child into this facility. The level of care is superb. All the staff genuinely cares about my child. My child actually loves it here. And does not want to go home.

I'm on the fence with my experience here with my daughter. She was there for 6 months. I loved her doctor and therapist. They were amazing, but the rest of the staff really just sucks for lack of a better word. The techs do not care and do not follow the rules. The nurses will lie to you about things. The discharge planning is also terrrible. My daughter sat with an ear infection for a week, and several instances of miscommunication. But, they did help my daughter greatly, and it is a better facility than the other ones she's been in previously. I would recommend the facility- but you have to be on top of the lower level staff and handle your own discharge..

im currently a resident at sandy pines, and i am 14 years old i feel very uncomtherble at this facility and the staff treat me unfairly and in a very rude way i cry all the time they dont care abt us even when i ask to talk to someone they say no . i dont like this facility period i would be scared to death to come back to this place even tho ive only been here for a month i am going to get my mother to pull me out this god damn shit hole dont ever send ur child or anyone here period

horrible place to send your kids honestly. my experience was awful because staff wouldn't care when i had a panic attack and always attacked me whenever i wore leggings or anything at that. the male staff touched female clients and when in restraints held them or whomever wrong. secondly, the food there was awful. sometimes decent but mostly awful and on seagull unit they wouldn't ask if we wanted alternatives. On manatee they were horrible and would fight for anything. those girls terrorized me. always tried to fight me. and people weren't focusing on themselves and getting into relationships. I did to be honest but i stopped cause i needed to better myself. thirdly, they need to shut down fking immediately and never open again. they suck and can go fly a kite.

This place is horrible i agree with all the bad stuff everyone has said. Please do not send your kid here. So traumatic. It doesn't help, I went there three times and I still had THE EXACT SAME PROBLEMS. If anything I felt like it made me worse, it made me scared of adults because they were so mean sometime over the littlest things. It made my innocence to away because the kids there did very inappropriate things around me and said inappropriate things to me too. So overall don't send your kids here it's not a good place, it's not gonna help them, it'll just make it worse, I can assure you. A good place to send your kid though, is Camp E Nini Hassee. That place is amazing, staff are so nice! It helped me so much. I feel like a completely different person. Please don't send your kids to Sandy Pines. Send them to Camp E Nini Hassee!
