According to SAMHSA’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 23.5 million people ages 12 or older needed treatment for a drug or alcohol abuse problem in 2009. Of these, 11.2% received treatment at a specialty facility.
SAMHSA also reports admissions & discharges from substance abuse treatment facilities* in its Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS). According to TEDS, there were 1.8 million admissions for alcohol and drug abuse patients to facilities that report to State systems. Most admissions involved alcohol abuse (41.4%). Heroin & other opiates accounted for the largest percentage at 20%, followed by marijuana at 17%. View teen drug use statistics.
