How hard is it for an alcoholic to stop drinking?

The last few months my employee is chronically late to work, when he shows up he smells of alcohol. How hard is it for an alcoholic to stop drinking, i have never had problems.

Alcoholism is very different than casual alcohol use. Ttheir brain recognizes alcohol as an important component to their biological well-being and causes them to impulsively seek out the drug regardless of the consequences.
