How do you know if someone has a drinking problem?

Rumors are starting to spread about my friend's husband. The rumor is that he has a drinking problem. I want to be supportive of my friend, but I don't want to offend her if it is not true. What signs should I look for to see if it looks like he is drinking a lot?

Heavy drinkers usually give themselves away eventually. You can watch for increased tension between your friend and her husband, possible problems on the job, (including him taking lots of sick days), or your friend might start to withdraw from social engagements. If you feel there is a problem, perhaps you can offer to attend an Alanon meeting with her.
