Can codeine cause depression?

Prescribed codeine cough syrup after getting terribly sick. I feel depressed ever since I started taking the prescription and Ive never experienced depression before. Is the depression stuff from the codeine?

Use of codeine can cause a disruption in neurochemical processes and can cause depression.
