Can alcoholism cause depression?

I was told that I need to pull myself out of depression and when this happened I got super frustrated. Drinking is often my relief route from depressions debilitation and I've been thinking, is drinking the cause of my depression?

Personally, I believe that alcohol does have a lot to do when symptoms of depression.

Although alcohol consumption alone isnt known to cause depression, the effects it has on ones life is negative and great in number which can contribute to an alcoholic developing depression.

Yes, it is proven that alcohol IS actually a depressant. But yes, it feels as though it takes away your depression when it takes away/mixed up your mental abilities.
