Hello there, My dad was prescribed oxycontin for back pain and some form of degenrative arthritis. This happened several years ago And at that time it didn't take a very long until he started abusing it. He went into a spiral of an ugly and exhausting addiction after about four years he put all of it down and manage to stay clean for a little less than a year and then decided to go back on pain medication. The difference this time he claims is that he's on methadone and oxycodone. I see him abusing the oxycodone and a like he did with oxycontin and when asking him about it he said the way that he uses his pain medication is to help the pain subsided faster.

Brooke I am sorry to hear that you are going through this with your father I'm sure this has to be very hard for you. I am an addict myself and what you're describing sounds very familiar to me. There's was one point when i was prescribed several different pain meds including oxycodone, oxycontin, hydrocodone, fentanyl patches, you name it... the doc gave it to me. So to answer your question, oxycodone and oxycontin are unfortunately the same drug. I hope things get better for you and your father, addiction is hard to beat.

The reason your dad is abusing his pain meds is not to make the pain go away quicker. He's doing it for the euphoria or in simpler terms to get high. I swear doctors are relentless these days to prescribe a man addicted to pain pills more of the same pills a year after being clean. Because although there's a difference in action time between oxycodone and oxycontin they are overall the same thing.
