What are some good alternatives to 12 step programs that can help me stay accountable in my recovery?

No, you don't need to do the 12-steps. I suggest it but you can do other things. Check out moderation management or SMART recovery.

To answer your question simply, No, you don't have to do the 12-Steps. HOWEVER, the spiritual principles that the 12-step uses are important to learn how to live by (the 12 steps didn't create these principles., they have always been there for us, in my opinion .. they are God given.. it's just that they made them into a 12 step system to live by). That being said, I do not personally agree with some of the things that are in the big books and that occur at 12-step programs and you do not have to attend them if you don't want to. There are plenty of people who choose another route when it comes to recovery. The most important thing is not lying to yourself. We can find something wrong with ANYTHING in our lives. If you're not going to do the 12-steps, you better have a backup plan. Because you are surely at risk for falling into old ways. Some go to church (being spiritual and not religious is better), some go to SMART Recovery, some follow Jesus and go to Celebrate Recovery, and some create their own recovery community and live their lives writing about recovery, sharing their stories, and giving back to others.
