It's definitely possible. Drug use is initiated to relieve mental health conditions' symptoms all the time! Some of the common symptoms of bipolar are depression, insomnia and anxiety. These symptoms are temporarily relieved by lots of substances. Since it's only temporary relief, it's easy to want to go back to whatever relieves these symptoms shortly after the effects of the last dose/use wear off, which leads to an addiction almost every time. Prescribed medication for bipolar by a knowledgeable mental health professional is the best relief in the short-term and long-term.

Self-medicating with drugs or alcohol with the existence of bipolar disorder is common. If someone has bipolar disorder prior to drug use, he or she has a pre-existing mental disorder that can put that individual at high risk for addiction.
