Can you detox from alcohol at home?

I am a heavy drinker and admittedly an alcoholic. I have been steady drinking every day all day for the past several years but I have had enough and I am going to stop very soon. I have gotten mixed reviews about if I need to go to the hospital or see a doctor prior to quitting or if I can just suck it up on my couch for a few days while i sweat it out. Does anybody know if you can detox from alcohol at home?

You can do anything you put your mind to. But it is probably not safe to just cut yourself off cold turkey without having at least somebody there to make sure you don't die or anything. If seeing a doctor prior to quitting is an option then you should definitely do that first.
