I'm an addict in recovery and just had a child, will he grow up to be an addict like me?

Hi Chelsea, No one can really say for sure if your child will be an addict or not. We can't tell the future, but we can go by what you know and you can adjust your parenting to include talks about addiction, make sure your child has healthy interests and extracurricular activities, is well adjusted, and emotionally intelligent. You know that your child will certainly have the genetic predisposition, so you can adjust your parenting style REASONABLY to ensure that you keep a good eye on your child and raise him/her in the healthiest way possible. At the same time, don't put too much pressure on yourself or blame yourself if your child goes down the same path that you did. Sometimes, it happens. All you can do is your best. I hope this answer helped.

Addiction is genetic but that doesn't mean he's doomed to be an addict as an adult. Educate him as it becomes appropriate and share your concerns honestly. Until then, don't worry too much about it. Enjoy your baby and all the things parenthood has to offer. If you start to recognize warning signs later on, address them immediately. For now, the most important thing is that you stay clean yourself for your precious baby. One day at a time!
