I really thought I could just quit drinking whenever I wanted to but I didn’t realize it was so hard. Why is it so hard?

Drinking makes you feel relaxed. So many people drink, it can make it hard to be the one not drinking. But don’t beat yourself up over it. I suggest you get some professional help with it. That will make it easier for you.
