Why is Codeine addictive? Please help me understand why my dad is addicted to a cough syrup?

Chemically, it is the dopamine it releases in your brain which is making your dad feel good. On a different note, he might be using it to cope with life. I hope he finds help soon. Maybe talk with him? I hope this helps.

Addiction happens to the best of us and I’m sorry your hurting because of your dad. I hope he can see he deserves help. He might be using codeine to feel normal now. After awhile, you just feel so sick without it, you just need it to cope.
