I have a step daughter that’s living on the streets. Her mom was a heroin addict, and I thought that she was going to be better, but she became addicted too. Why does this happen?

Genetics play a huge part in addiction. Her mom was a user and it stands to reason that she would be too. It also has to do with not knowing how to cope with life without drugs. Heroin is a powerful opioid and it hijacks the brain chemicals faster than most of us think is possible. All it takes is one use to start building a mental dependency. She needs help and it sounds like she needs to come to terms with some things in her past.

Addiction is definitely hereditary. And the behavior is learned. If she grew up around it and her mom hasn’t gotten help, then she may not see it as a huge deal. Or, she could feel like it’s a way for her to connect with her mom. Both the psychological and the physical dependency feed each other until she doesn’t know how to live without it. I’ll keep you in my thoughts, good luck!
