Why do people get addicted to crack?

My wife left me for crack. I know that sounds weird, but she literally took everything we owned, packed it up, and left me to sell it for crack cocaine. SHe met some chick with the same habits, and I haven’t heard from her until now. He’s trying to apologize saying that he’s in recovery and that his addiction wasn’t entirely his fault. I’m not sure I understand, why was he addicted to crack?

It’s impossible to know who will and won’t be addicted to drugs. When a person becomes addicted, it takes over their entire lives—as it sounds like you know. Crack is a powerful stimulant and it wears of pretty quickly. He’s probably both chemically and mentally addicted if he’s willing to go that far. He may have been using because it made him feel good about himself or because he needed to hide from something in his past.
