Why do crack addicts scratch?

I don’t get it you always see crack addicts scratching themselves in movies, why do they do that? Is it just a movie thing?

The lady who lives in the ally would scratch her skin all the time. She was a heavy crack addict. I asked her once why she would scratch her skin so bad she would bleed. she told me it was because she could feel bugs crawling all over her skin.
