I am the aunt to twin nieces who turned 8 this year. They often ask me questions about the world around them, which is great, except for when they asked me which people are drug addicts. I was caught off guard and didn’t know what to say. Now, I want to come up with a good piece of advice to tell them to make sure they are aware of this problem. Does anyone have any good ideas?

Kids can be so curious, and I always think it’s better in these situations to tell them the truth. They are going to find out eventually. I would explain how addicts are people with a disease that makes their bodies and minds crave things that are bad for them, like drugs or alcohol. I would also say that addicts aren’t bad people, just people who have made bad choices and can’t stop. Let them know that addicts can be people from all walks of life- small towns, big cities, poor families and wealthy backgrounds. Good luck, and I’m sure you’ll do great explaining this to them!
