Is moderate, occasional drinking the first stage of alcoholism? I worry that I’ll slip into alcoholism because it does run in my family.

Not necessarily, no. It’s normal for many people to drink every once in a while. A glass or two of wine at dinner is not a cause for concern, and neither is a beer with your buddies after a long week at work. If you are drinking every day and your drinking is affecting your career, education and relationships, then there’s a problem.

It’s totally fine to have a drink or two every so often. Of course, you want to be careful with how much you’re drinking and not overdo it, but you shouldn’t stress about the occasional glass of wine or beer. If you find yourself drinking heavily and often, or craving alcohol to deal with everyday stress, then you may be at risk of developing an addiction.
