what is it that makes someone an addict? I need to know so I don’t ever become like my Mom and leave her family behind.

Some people might say that there is a biological vulnerability in the addict before they even try drugs for the first time. Other people suggest it could be hereditary.

It sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders and don’t want to end up in a bad place. That in itself will help you not become an addict. And I don’t think you will ever leave your family behind.
