What makes codeine addictive?

If there is no real prof that codeine aids in cough suppression, why put it in there, I mean isn’t codeine addictive? What makes it so addictive?

Its true there is technically not enough evidence that says it aids in cough suppression, but it does work for treating ibs. What makes it so addictive is the opium, once it is broken down in the body, it effects the brain’s reward center producing feeling of pleasure and wellbeing.
