My parents keep telling me not to try this or that because it’s very addictive. What do they mean, and what really is addictive?

Substances are described as addictive because people are more likely to develop a dependency on them. This includes alcohol and many illegal drugs. It also applies to some prescription drugs. People can get addicted to any number of things – junk food, computer games, gambling.
