I am learning more and more about addiction and drugs, but i’m uncertain about the addiction cycle. Can someone explain it to me?

Unfortunately My Dad goes through this cycle, he gets off the drugs, then goes right back to using them on occasion, then he can’t help it, he goes right back to being addicted again. it’s frustrating when you really want your dad back.
