I want to get off pain pills on my own, but my sister tells me I need medical detox. What does that mean?

I think your sister is right. It sounds like you are young and probably don’t want to go back to such pain pills or worse. Detox on your own can be harmful and may not help you deal with the reason for taking the drugs in the first place.
