Because the drug affects many different parts of the body, it can have lasting affects on the different systems and everyone experiences withdrawal in different ways. Longer use is going to lead to a longer withdrawal period, but I've never found withdrawal to last months. Withdrawing from longer use of heroin should be withdrawn in a medical facility where they can keep an eye on your symptoms.

Heroin withdrawal can last from a few days to a little over a week. Symptoms include nausea, muscle spasms, sweating, shaking, agitation, depression, and abdominal pain. Symptoms start anywhere from 6-12 hours after you stop using the drug. Medical detox is what is recommended for heroin withdrawal, and methadone is a prescribed drug that can help with the withdrawal symptoms.
