What does it mean to be an alcoholic?

I’ve spent my whole life heavy drinking, like the past 20 years or so, does this make me an alcoholic?

Many of us drink to excess at times but don’t become alcoholics. This doesn’t mean it isn’t harmful for your health. Alcoholics rely on alcohol though, they plan their day around their next drink. They have withdrawal symptoms when they can’t have one.
