  5. What does drug withdrawal mean?

My dad has sadly become addicted to pain pills. Every time he tries to quit, he can’t make it through the withdrawals. Does anyone have any advice as to what withdrawals are and how to make them easier?

Because your dad is addicted to painkillers, the first few days after his last dose can be full of discomfort, depression and pain. When he feels these withdrawal symptoms, he is more likely to give up and give in to his addiction. He will find it easier to go through these symptoms of stopping or reducing drug use with the help of a medical doctor or professional recovery team.

Withdrawals are a part of the cycle of drug addiction. These painful, uncomfortable symptoms make your dad give in to pain pills just to make the feeling go away. When he doesn’t take pain pills, he likely feels depressed, anxious and sick to his stomach. By seeking professional help, rather than going at it alone, your dad may have better luck on his recovery journey.
