What defines an addiction?

Addiction is a beast. But how do we know when its gotten there. I know that a lot of people have addictions but not all of them are drug related. Like I have a friend that says they are addicted to fries - shes obvously not addicted in the same terms as like someone on meth but is it still an addiction?

Hmm I'm not sure were to start. Addiction is a compulsive need to do something regardless of negitive consequences. So I guess in theory if she was willing to like do anything to get fries then it could be... but that's not normally the case.
