What are addictive behaviors?

My brother has started acting really weird. He is rarely home and when he is he is on the phone constantly. Also, he has been borrowing money from me weekly and he has a good job but has not paid any of it back. Does this mean he might have an addiction?

The behaviors do sound like possible addiction, but not necessarily to drugs. It could also be a gambling addiction, or even that he met a love interest and is trying to make a good impression with lots of money. Does he act different when he is home? Sleep more? Talk more? Do his eyes have smaller or larger pupils than normal? Drug use often affects the eyes.
