My sister is trying to tell me that addiction isn’t a choice and that it’s an actual disease. Is that true?, because it seems like you choose to use drugs to me.

Yep. Addiction is a proven disease of the brain. It doesn’t have a cure, and it makes drugs the most important thing in a person’s life. It’s why they need both medical and psychological help when they want to stop using. Yes, they do need to want to stop and it does take will power, but it’s about chemicals in the brain at the same time.

This is a debate, and mostly people who are ignorant about addiction argue that it’s a choice. Addiction is a disease that happens when the brain has a disproportionate reaction to drugs or alcohol. It really is a chemical imbalance. Not every person’s brain does the same thing when they use drugs, and it’s been studied by the scientific community and they agree that, yes, it is a medical condition.
