I went through a 72-hour detox at the local hospital, and I think I’m about through the worst of the alcohol withdrawals. I’m seeing a counselor and I want to get more help but I think I can handle this with AA. Does it cost anything to join the meetings?

First off, make sure that you’re healthy enough to skip inpatient rehab. Alcohol withdrawals are nasty. If you feel strong, AA has a great 12 step program that works for a lot of people, and the good news is that it’s free. Think they take donations, but they’ll help you out because it’s what they do.

Subsequently . . .It doesn’t cost anything. They can only help if you’re honest and you’re willing to work the program. If you can do it and stay sober, more power to you—but I needed inpatient rehab to kick my problem.
