My brother has been an alcoholic for years and done a lot of horrible things to our family. How many times do we have to forgive him before we can just give up on him without feeling any regret about it.

Alcoholics can change their ways if they want to and get the right help. Instead of giving up on your brother, consider going with him to a 12-step program where he can learn how to get his life back on track.

If your brother has no plans to change his life for the better and quit using alcohol, you need to do what is best for your family and keep him away until he can get his life together. You have to protect your family and should never feel guilty about it.
