I survived a heroin overdose last month, but I know the next time around I may not be so lucky. I want to say goodbye to this drug for good. Does anybody have any idea how long it will take me to detox?

After you take your last dose of heroin, you will start to experience withdrawal symptoms within 6-12 hours. By 72 hours, you will be in the thick of it, experiencing the nausea, vomiting, fever and more that so many people worry about. However, once you get through that, you should be on the slow but steady path to recovery.

Detox is really a process. The amount of time it takes for things to get out of your body depends on how much you used, how often you used it, your metabolism, and your size. A bigger person with the slower metabolism will obviously have a harder time getting the heroin out of their system. Theyll also probably need more of the drug to feel good. Heroin is making a huge comeback in the US because of the number of people addicted to prescription medications . If you do plan on trying to detox, it may be beneficial to go into an inpatient rehab program.

That’s a good call on your part. The worst physical symptoms of heroin withdrawal peak 3-4 days after your last use. Within a week, the most intense of these symptoms will subside, but you may experience depression and cravings for weeks and even months to come.

When I tried to quit using, I felt a lot better in about 72 hours. Honestly, though, I know some people who say it takes a couple of weeks. If you have restless leg syndrome or other issues, it can be a lot worse and take a lot longer. Just make sure you take some time off, and get help if you need it.

Heroin every state in the US is been touched by the opioid epidemic , and thousands of people are dying every year because of heroin. Its so important to get the help you need to stop using. Detoxing from heroin is just the start. Youll also need to get help with the reason you used in the first place. If you dont take care of the root of the problem, its just going to keep coming back.
