How long does withdrawal from alcohol last?

My neighbor who is blind drinks daily, he knows how many steps to the bar and can get there on his own, but on the way back, he often falls and hurts himself, sometimes blacking out. This morning he says he is going to stop drinking today. I’m wondering how long withdrawal will last, so I know how long to keep and eye on him.

Someone should be with him to help him through the detox. The symptoms can start 8 hours after the last drink and could last a week.
