On Monday I got diagnosed with depression.. the frustrating part about all of this is that I am in recovery from addiction to. I dont think I can take medications and do a 12-step program at the same time. I am angry at the moment and confused and want to understand the relation between depression and addiction.

First, it is completely okay to take your depression medication when you are in recovery. You always take the advice of mental health professionals. Antidepressants do not cause the same effects that drugs do in your brain system. They will help your brain with the things it may lack like serotonin, dopamine, or norepinephrine. Most of the time people who are in addiction also have a co-occurring disorder whether they know it or not. It is a good thing that you are attacking everything so that way you do not slip into a depression and feel worse then you did before you got sober, that is a dangerous place to be!

Addiction and subtsance abuse causes the process of neurochemistry to get disrupted and often times will lead to or worsen issues like depression.
