Can alcohol be addictive?

From about a month ago I started drinking hard liquor to help ease stress and now I find that I am relying on it.

An aa member once told me that the top fundamental piece in alcoholism, aka alcohol addiction is the alcoholics personality and not the quanity in which it is consumed. Alcoholism is more or less defined through a persons reasons for drinking and the psychological impact it has.
