As someone who has required addiction treatment services far too many times, I am able to see that Ocean Recovery is ahead, by far, of most (including some of the most "reputable" in the US), in regards to effectiveness and overall quality of care... I spent well over a year in their care, between residential and sober living (although most do NOT stay that long). Ocean Recovery is truly different from other treatment programs partly because they devote the time that is necessary for long-term success in dealing with a stubborn malady like addiction. The staff genuinely care greatly, and put clients' wellness before anything else. Their program provides exceptionally high quality therapy, psychiatry with an excellent doctor, and will cover every other client need that must be met (including eating disorder treatment and weekly meetings with a registered dietitian if necessary). On top of these things, there are ample recreational and social events as a part of the program. Basically, there's nothing I can say to adequately express my love and gratitude for this place, and if you're struggling with addiction, you will NOT go wrong choosing to find help here. I definitely think that if you choose to devote the time to Ocean Recovery and all they offer in the same way their treatment professionals devote their time to you, you will leave a truly better person. Their staff will set you up for a life of personal success and meaningful connection, and although not an "easy" program, what meaningful job is EVER easy?

I went through Oceans in 2009 at the age of 19. My life was a wreck, my relationships were in tatters, I was mentally and physically broken. The staff was incredibly skilled and loving, but also tough- they don’t let addicts manipulate them like addicts typically do to their families and friends. I had to put in hard work and be honest and be in uncomfortable situations, but boy was it worth it. I am now 9 1/2 years sober and lead a productive, healthy life that I love. I have amazing relationships with my family and friends, and have no desire to drink or use. Oceans gave me the start to a whole new existence I didn’t think was possible, and for that I am eternally grateful.

I highly recommend Ocean Recovery. It was hard to send my loved one out of state for rehab but the idea was to find a safe place away from routines and familiarity in order to focus on the problem and solutions. I worried about him taking the process seriously but from the beginning, I was impressed with the structured environment and trust building goals along with placing responsibility on personal goals. Kevin Cullen, who we first met with immediately instilled a sense of confidence because of his street smart, tough but empathetic style. I knew that few if any would succeed at trying to outsmart him or the process, which is typical with addicts. I went in 2014 in groups I was told “ you have nothing good to say so shut up” one of the girls lied by saying I was always on the phone with my mom and not going out. And I was banned from talking to my mom for a month and locked out of the apartment. Yes we went on outing. Mentally abusive the owner and the nutritionist. I got kicked out because I didn’t want to stand up and give someone a hug I was tired they were changing meds. I met some kind staff the night staff and one of the staff. I know this place works for some. I don’t know how they are still open! Maybe they got better but I am not holding my breath

I had a horrible experience at Oceans Recovery. I am a chronic pain patient & they did not have a clue how to deal with it. I was forced to do activities that aggravated my pain & I was there due to getting off my opiate pain medication so my pain was through the roof. Also they forgot to send some of my paperwork from detox home with me to take to my new pain management Dr. I was also told I would "never be a great person" a "great mother or grandma" if I left. Very dirty tactics to try and get me to stay.

I agreed to 45 days (and was accepted for that time period) but after being there a week they informed me and my family that I would have to stay at least 90 days. The location is on the beach in Balboa but the accommodations are not reflective of what is advertised on their website. The group therapy room is inside a dingy, dark, & windowless garage. The shared "living" and "sleeping" areas are not at all what I would expect for $30k per month (with no insurance). I felt demeaned and diminished while I was there, counting the days until I could reach the 90 day conclusion of the living hell I endured. They forced me into an eating disorder program that I never had intention of participating in and forced me to participate in the AA program and attend several meetings each day - when I thought I was there to get treatment for traumatic childhood trauma. A few weeks before I reached 90 days the Program Director advised my husband that I would need to remain there for an extended period of time for sober living and PHP (to ensure that they were able to continue collecting their $30k per month for as long as they possibly could). That was the point at which I left (against medical advice) and my family took to heart the recommendation from the program director made to them that they should not pick me up and leave me homeless on the street with no phone or wallet (credit cards/money). When I finally made it home (on my own accord) my relationship with my husband, sister, and children was in tatters. My relationship with my therapist is over and I have nightmares about this experience every single night. If I had ANY recourse against this facility other than posting this review I would take it. I ABSOLUTELY 100% would not recommend Ocean Recovery to anyone and I regret ever having gone there, it was the worst mistake of my life.
